West Bengal Voter ID Rules 2026: Documents Required, Eligibility & How to Apply
Any Indian citizen aged 18 or above as of the qualifying date is eligible to apply for a Voter ID.
The Election Commission has outlined guidelines for voter registration ahead of the upcoming polls. The rules specify eligibility criteria, required documents, and application procedures for citizens seeking to enrol in the electoral roll.
Under the norms set by the Election Commission of India, any Indian citizen aged 18 or above as of the qualifying date is eligible to apply for a Voter ID. Applicants must be ordinary residents of the constituency where they seek registration and should not already be enrolled in another electoral roll.

Commonly accepted identity documents include Aadhaar card, passport, PAN card, or driving licence. For address verification, documents such as utility bills, rent aGreements, or bank passbooks may be used. Passport-sized photographs are also required as part of the application process.
“You can apply for voter registration online through the VSP if you are an Indian citizen who is 18 years of age or older on the qualifying dates. You will need to provide your basic information, such as your name, date of birth, and address, as well as your Aadhaar number (optional) along with the required documents," the ECI said on its website.
The application can be submitted both online and offline. For digital registration, applicants can visit the National Voters’ Service Portal or use the Voter Helpline App to fill out Form 6, which is meant for new voter enrolment. Offline applications can be filed by submitting the same form at designated Electoral Registration Offices.
Once the application is submitted, authorities carry out a verification process, which may include field checks. Upon successful verification, the applicant’s name is added to the electoral roll and a Voter ID card is issued.
Officials have urged citizens, especially first-time voters, to complete their registration well before deadlines to avoid last-minute delays. The commission has also advised applicants to ensure accuracy in submitted details to prevent rejection or duplication of entries.
