From Chennai Airport to Global Crime: My Close‑up on the World's Top Smuggled Animals
Wildlife trafficking is not just a distant headline – it is a harsh reality that I witnessed firsthand at Chennai International Airport when customs officers busted two smuggling attempts, confiscating 49 exotic creatures spanning twelve different species. Among the haul were gibbons, cobras and pythons, some of which were heavily sedated and venomous. The incident highlights how venomous animals have long been part of illegal trade networks, prompting officials to investigate whether these creatures were being ordered for specific, perhaps even sinister, purposes. In this article I share my personal observations of the operation, explain why such species are coveted by traffickers, and discuss the broader list of ten animals that repeatedly surface in global smuggling rings. From the bustling streets of Chennai to remote border crossings, the story unfolds with a mix of facts, on‑the‑ground impressions, and everyday Indian examples that reveal how deep and troubling wildlife crime really is.
