Sushmita Dev Resigns from Trinamool Congress and Steps Down as Rajya Sabha MP

Sushmita Dev broke her silence on Wednesday after resigning from the Trinamool Congress and stepping down as a Rajya Sabha MP . She framed the move not as a sudden exit, but something born from a long political journey and deep personal reflection.

She said there were plenty of reasons behind it all, but then she suggested not everything in politics needed to be laid out publicly. “What prompted me to this decision is a very long story,” Dev remarked. “In politics, I don’t think that everything needs to be revealed.” She added something about feeling like she didn't want to be caught between two boats.

She described herself as politically independent after resigning. “Today, I am a free woman,” she stated simply. She mentioned meeting Himanta Biswa Sarma , the Assam Chief Minister, saying she paid him a courtesy visit.

That kind of remark came right after she had met with Sarma. It definitely fueled speculation about where her political path would go next maybe towards the BJP ? But Dev didn't give any immediate roadmap. She stressed that she wasn't involved in whatever was happening inside the Trinamool Congress right now.

“I am not privy to who is doing what,” she explained. “Also, I’m not directly involved in Bengal politics; I’m from Assam.” And then there was a clear line drawn: no comments against Mamata Banerjee .

Dev talked about politics itself being different. She felt it was driven by practical stuff, not just raw emotion. “In politics, there is no place for emotions,” she insisted. When talking about the party’s recent troubles, she pointed back at the leader. “ Mamata Banerjee has her own reasons for losing.”

She asked for space before making any new calls. She needed a break to think about her future. “I have resigned for my personal and political reasons,” Dev said. “Everyone gets to change their minds in this country eventually. I can’t say anything more right now.”

“I need some time to think,” she reiterated. “Assam is my state, and I need to figure things out.”

This resignation hit the party hard. It marked another stumble for the TMC , which has been dealing with internal friction lately. Dev became the second MP to step down from the party within a week after Sukhendu Shekhar Ray made his move. She’s set to meet Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan and formally hand in her resignation at one pm Wednesday.

The whole thing comes amid growing unease inside the party. Dissident leaders have been making claims that several Trinamool MPs are pulling away from the organization. It just feels like things are shifting fast.
