Brutal Torture and Death Allegations in Uttarakhand

Ketan Lal died after allegedly being brutally tortured over a relationship with a minor girl from an upper-caste family in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district. This is what the family claims, sparking serious outrage among local villagers and demands for immediate justice.

Police reported that Ketan, a resident of Deval village, passed away after he and his friend, Diwakar Dimri, were allegedly assaulted by members of the girl’s family in Kholgarh village on Sunday night.

Diwakar managed to survive the attack and is currently receiving treatment. But Ketan… he succumbed to his injuries.

As the investigation started moving forward, details about what happened emerged from the victim's side. It got really disturbing.

Ketan’s father, Dhanpal Lal, made these claims when speaking to reporters outside Baurari District Hospital on Tuesday. He alleged that his son was subjected to horrific torture before he died.

“His nails were pulled out with pliers,” Dhanpal Lal said. “Iron nails were driven into his feet and severe wounds were dealt to his genitals.” That’s what the family claimed.

They also stated that Ketan’s body showed extensive injuries. Deep bruises covered his back, chest, all his limbs. It looked like prolonged physical abuse.

The police investigation noted that Ketan had reportedly been in contact with a minor girl from Kholgarh for about six months.

Then Sunday night, around eleven o'clock, the girl allegedly called him on his phone. She asked him to come to the village.

Ketan then traveled to Kholgarh with Diwakar Dimri.

What happened next is where things got worse. Police said that once they arrived, members of the girl’s family allegedly locked them inside a room and assaulted them with sticks.

The following morning, the girl’s father apparently informed Dhanpal Lal about Ketan's terrible condition. He asked him to take the body back immediately.

When Dhanpal Lal reached the village, he claimed he found Ketan covered in blood. It was a scene of horror.

The teenager was rushed to a community health centre in Chaund Lambgaon. But no matter how much they tried, he couldn't be saved there.

This death really ignited fury across the area. Villagers and family members refused to accept Ketan’s body simply because it was there. They demanded that all those involved face arrest right away.

“I will not take the body from here until all the culprits are arrested,” Dhanpal Lal insisted. “Even if it takes four days or ten days.”

He added something else, a plea born of desperation. “I am a poor man. I don’t have the resources to run around courts for years. I want justice delivered right here. Only then will I take my son’s body.”

The family also mentioned that there were videos circulating on social media showing the assault. Several people at the hospital had reportedly seen them.

On the police side, Ketan belonged to a Scheduled Caste community. A murder case was registered. They brought in provisions from Section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The Senior Superintendent of Police for Tehri Garhwal, Shweta Choubey, said two main suspects have been arrested. These were the girl’s father, Yashveer Singh, and her grandfather, Vidya Singh.

She confirmed that police teams and forensic experts looked at the crime scene. An intensive investigation is now underway. They are trying to make sure no accused person gets away with it.

Meanwhile, things got political too. Villagers submitted a memorandum directly to the Chief Minister. It demanded a fair probe. Justice for Ketan. And protection for his family moving forward.

The Uttarakhand government also announced compensation. Eight point two five lakh rupees was offered to Ketan’s family as an attempt at redress.
