Protecting Your Pets from Ticks and Fleas in the Summer

Summer usually means longer walks, garden time, playtime outside for the pets. But there’s a hidden danger out there that many pet parents just don't see: ticks and fleas .

As the temperatures climb up, these parasites get really active. That makes pets much more vulnerable to getting infested.

He points out ticks can carry disease-causing things around. Fleas? They hide in places you just don’t look closely at.

You might not notice anything until symptoms show up. Dr Saraswat noted that by the time owners see actual problems, there’s often already a heavy parasite load going on inside the pet. To fight this risk, vets push for checking pets regularly during the summer months. Just a few minutes of looking around every day can catch things early and help stop bigger issues from developing.

Pet parents really need to focus on where ticks like to hitch a ride. Dr Saraswat pointed out some spots that are prime real estate for them. Since these areas are often covered by fur or just plain hard to see, touching the pet sometimes tells you more than just looking.

Visual checks aren't always enough though. Especially if your pet has a thick coat. Running your hands through the fur can reveal little bumps or attached ticks that would totally slip past your eyes otherwise. Regular physical checks often find parasites way before they show up when grooming time rolls around.

Fleas, though... they are tricky. They spend most of their life cycle away from the actual animal. So experts advise you to get into a habit of checking and cleaning up sleeping areas. Bedding, blankets, carpets you need to reduce where fleas can multiply inside your home. Cleaning those pet spaces helps cut down on indoor multiplication and makes control easier later on.

Don't wait for something to be obvious before you act. There’s this common idea that if a pet is already on some preventive treatment plan, they don’t need constant checks. That’s not what vets say. Prevention stuff and routine checks have to work together. The expert stressed that prevention products and regular inspections actually work best when they are used side by side.

Make daily inspection part of your routine. Since parasite activity spikes in the summer, it should be just as regular as feeding or walking your pet. That’s really the best way to stop parasites in their tracks. A quick tick and flea check takes maybe a few minutes, but it can flag potential problems early. It keeps pets comfortable, healthy, and ready for the season safely.
