Aamir Khan on Test Screenings and Filmmaking Feedback

Aamir Khan recently opened up about how he handles test screenings. It’s kind of telling, really, why he usually skips watching films himself. He admitted he just doesn't like sitting in those screenings for other filmmakers, especially right before a movie drops.

He said it’s just hard to hide what you really think if you hate something. It’s that simple.

At that Screen Academy Masterclass, held at Whistling Woods International, Aamir spoke about this. He felt that brutally honest feedback at the very end of a film doesn’t really help much. Why? Because the filmmakers can’t actually make big changes anymore. It just makes them worry more before the release.

“I see very few films,” he mentioned. That’s weird, I know. But it’s been his deal since he was a kid. He’s never really been a watcher, not really. But he reads a ton, so that kind of stuff fills up the gap, I guess.

Then he got into the real reason. “One of the reasons I don’t see films is I don’t know how to lie,” he said. If someone asks him how the movie was, he’d just say, ‘It was awful, man. I got bored.’ It’ll show on his face. You can’t fake that kind of reaction easily.

He added something about the timing. “They call you a week before the release. You can’t contribute anything at the last minute,” he commented. He felt that would just ruin everyone’s sleep.

There was this bit about advice, too. Aamir recalled something from Javed Akhtar. The veteran lyricist jokingly suggested using a phrase like, “You’ve outdone yourself,” when something was disappointing. Aamir thought that implied they made such bad films, they’d even managed to outdo themselves in that failure. It can mean anything, he said.

During the session, he also gave some pointers for the aspiring filmmakers. Don’t get defensive when you hear the feedback. Audiences stop giving honest input the second they sense you’re pushing back. It’s tough, he admitted accepting criticism. But he stressed it’s necessary if you want to actually improve things before it hits the screen.

Meanwhile, where is he at now? Aamir was recently seen in Sitaare Zameen Par . Now, the buzz is about the sequel to 3 Idiots . That’s the one everyone’s waiting for. And apparently, he’s reuniting with Rajkumar Hirani on this one. It’s in pre-production right now. They’re bringing back the original trio, Aamir, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi. That’s what’s happening.
