The Complicated History of Zahara Jolie-Pitt's Name Changes

The whole thing with Zahara Jolie-Pitt dropping “Pitt” from her name is… complicated. People are talking about it constantly.
It started with legal stuff, you know? Documents surfaced showing that Zahara filed a petition in the Superior Court of California to change her name. That’s what we have.
Her filing dates back to April 28th. It came just days after her brother, Maddox Jolie who is twenty-four also made a move. He legally removed his father’s last name then, following their parents splitting up in 2016. That was after two years of marriage and over ten years as a couple. The divorce itself got finalized way later, December 2024.
Jolie and Pitt have six kids together. Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, plus the twins Knox and Vivienne. It’s a lot of names tangled up in this.
Zahara is now the third child to actually file for the name change, dropping “Pitt” after Maddox and Shiloh.
There’s this side note about what people are saying behind the scenes. Some sources close to Pitt have commented that it’s sad to see someone repeatedly publicize how they managed to separate their children from the other parent. It just sounds messy.
Zahara herself has hinted at changing her name more than once. She did it when she walked the stage for her college graduation in Atlanta back in May, and her name was listed as “Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt.” But then, when she went up to get her diploma for that Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, her name was just “Zahara Marley Jolie.”
Something else happened with Vivienne. Months before that, the May 2024 Playbill for The Outsiders that Broadway musical Vivienne helped her mom produce credited her as Vivienne Jolie instead of Vivienne Jolie-Pitt. Nobody really clarified if she had actually changed it legally back then. It just floated there.
Maddox also recently dropped Pitt from his name in the credits of his mother’s latest movie, Couture . And Shiloh? He got a name change back in 2024 and now goes by Shiloh Jolie.
And there was that August 2024 video where Zahara introduced herself while joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She said something like, “My name is Zahara Marley Jolie. And landed all the way from the Golden State in the city full of angels: Los Angeles, California.” It felt very deliberate.
It’s all just moving around, isn't it? The names, the filings, the public hints.
