Narendra Modi's Milestone: India's Longest-Serving Prime Minister

Narendra Modi just hit a huge milestone. India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. Forty-three hundred ninety-nine days in office now. That beats Nehru's record, which was the first one.

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu spoke about it. He praised the leadership and everything Modi has done. Said India has reached “a new level” under his time.

In an opinion piece for the Indian Express, Naidu painted a picture of Modi’s life that felt pretty extraordinary. Humble beginnings in Vadnagar, Gujarat. Assisting his father as a tea vendor there. Then getting to the PM's office in South Block. That journey itself was huge, he wrote.

“Born to parents of modest means,” Naidu said. “Modi worked as a tea vendor in Vadnagar, helping his dad. To travel from there to the PM’s office... it’s an extraordinary achievement.”

He brought up early influences too. Modi’s time with the RSS shaped him. It built organizational skills. Clarity of vision for India’s future. A journey of self-realization, understanding Bharat and its people's problems. Envisioning that destiny as “Swarnim Bharat.” Striving for that vision.

Naidu also looked back at his political career. Backing Modi for the Prime Minister spot before the 2014 elections. That was when the BJP finally got a majority on its own, first time.

Then there’s the governance side. Naidu argued this tenure both as CM in Gujarat and then PM brought a new way of running things. Focused on delivery. Accountability. Getting public participation involved.

“At 51,” he noted. “Modi became the youngest Chief Minister of Gujarat, without even being an MLA. He showed his abilities right away. Unleashing the energy of the people.” That thirteen years as CM? Eventful in many ways.

Flagship projects came up too. Swachh Bharat. Jan Dhan accounts. Direct Benefit Transfer DBT. Ujjwala LPG connections. Ayushman Bharat. And all that digital stuff, UPI payments expanding things. Policies that supposedly changed lives for millions.

There were big political shifts too. Abrogation of Article 370. Ending triple talaq. Bringing in GST. Legislation for women reservations in Parliament and state assemblies. These are major moves mentioned by Naidu.

Security was another area. Modi is credited with strengthening national security. Pointing to the decline of left-wing extremism. Military actions like surgical strikes, Operation Sindoor.

On the foreign front, Naidu suggested India’s voice now matters more globally. The diplomatic approach guided by real national interests.

Thinking back over these years, Naidu recalled earlier talk about Modi's mission: “Making of Developed India.” MODI.

After all this time these twelve years Naidu said he had no doubt anymore. He rechristened the idea as the ‘Man of Destiny for India.’ Believes the PM is steering toward that “Swarnim Bharat” vision.

Modi himself became the longest-serving elected Prime Minister on Wednesday, hitting 4,399 days. He started in May 2014. Won three straight Lok Sabha elections. The first time a PM since Nehru managed to get three successive mandates from voters.

This achievement is supposed to be recognized big time. At a National Democratic Alliance conclave coming up in New Delhi. Senior leaders are expected to look at the tenure and figure out what’s next for the government.
