The Long March Escalates: Defiance and Crackdown in PoK

The long march by the Joint Awami Action Committee in PoK really kicked into gear on Tuesday. Leaders were striking a much more defiant tone now amid this widening crackdown. There are reports of fresh clashes everywhere. And growing anger over the deaths that have rocked the region these past three days.

They declared the first phase of the campaign a success. JAAC chairman Shaukat Mir announced it had successfully completed “Plan A” on the very opening day of the march.

“We have successfully completed the first day of the long march according to our Plan A,” Mir told supporters. He immediately responded to those accusations of treason authorities were leveling against the movement.

Then came the hard line. “The accusations of treason that have been made against us will soon have to be withdrawn. I would rather take a bullet first,” he said. It signaled they weren’t backing down, no matter what. Even with arrests and security operations targeting their leaders and activists.

Meanwhile, another key leader, Khawaja Mehran Advocate, moved into Poonch. He traveled through Tatta Pani with his convoy. Crowds followed him along the route. This happened as reports started coming out about fresh confrontations between protesters and security personnel in Kotli.

Clashes during those demonstrations in Kotli left people injured. Women and children were among those affected. The exact toll? Not clear. But these incidents just added to all the tension spreading across the region. It’s getting worse fast.

Mehran addressed his supporters directly about this whole situation. He accused the authorities of trying to crush dissent using force. “The policy of intimidating Kashmiris through bullets has failed miserably,” he stated.

He made it clear where they stood. “We will not step back even a single inch, even if our lives, wealth and everything we own are lost.” That kind of resolve is what’s unfolding now.

This all happens against the backdrop of one of the most serious protest movements seen in PoK lately. The agitation led by JAAC has escalated sharply following the crackdown by Pakistani authorities. Mass arrests of activists. Action taken against the organization itself. Unrest already turned deadly with multiple casualties reported during demonstrations and security operations over these last three days.

With day one of the long march finished, and leaders openly challenging both the crackdown and those treason claims, things look like they are heading into a much more confrontational phase. Convoys keep moving deeper into PoK. Fresh protests keep erupting. Fears are mounting that this standoff could lead to even more violence in the coming days. It feels raw.
