Political Strategy and MLA Movement in Madhya Pradesh

Digvijaya Singh tried to project some unity among the leaders. It’s all happening because Congress is looking at moving its MLAs out of Madhya Pradesh.

This move comes amid real worries about cross-voting in the upcoming June 18 Rajya Sabha elections. People are nervous, you know?

The whole strategy seems tied up with the BJP fielding another candidate. They put Mahesh Kewat forward. He’s the chairman of the MP Fishermen Welfare Board. Kewat actually entered the contest on the very last day of nominations. That felt like a big shift, turning that third seat into something much more direct.

Singh was speaking to CNN-News18 in Bhopal about this mess. He basically dismissed the speculation floating around. He said the BJP was "seriously mistaken" if they thought there were actual divisions inside the Congress legislature party. He insisted everything was fine. He claimed he was constantly talking to the MLAs, that they were all united.

Meanwhile, reports are saying the real move is looking at Karnataka. The idea is to shift those Madhya Pradesh MLAs over there. It’s an attempt to keep the whole group together. Trying to avoid those cross-voting scares surrounding the state elections. That's the underlying worry.

How did this discussion actually happen? According to PTI, the proposal got talked about during a late-night meeting. It was in the residence of Umang Singhar, the Leader of Opposition, where they discussed it all. About sixty MLAs were there for that session. Just sitting around talking strategy.

And if things go their way, the clock is ticking fast. The report suggests those MLAs could actually leave the state as early as Tuesday. That depends entirely on getting the nod from the Congress high command. A big decision hanging in the balance.

It’s complicated right now. The Congress currently has sixty-four MLAs in that 230-member assembly. There's one legislator who isn't eligible to vote, thanks to a Supreme Court ruling. That adds another layer of complexity.

To win even just that third Rajya Sabha seat, the BJP needs eight more votes. That’s tough. Even if they manage to get support from Kamlesh Dodiyar and Nirmala Sapre the BAP leader and Sagar MLA who joined the BJP in 2024 they still fall short of needing the required fifty-eight votes overall.

So, all these moves, the internal talks about shifting people, the fear of cross-voting... it’s a messy situation unfolding right now. It just feels like things are moving fast and without a clear path.
