Air India Changes Fuel Surcharge System for Domestic and International Routes

Air India pulled off a change to their fuel surcharge system on Tuesday. It hits both domestic and international routes. They’re moving towards a distance-based structure for flights inside the country, and the charges are stepping up for overseas travel, all because fuel prices are just climbing everywhere.

This stuff kicks in tomorrow, April 8th, for most flights, including those with Air India Express.

The domestic part is where things get distance-based. They scrapped the old flat rate model. Now it’s based on how far you fly. It’s supposed to keep pace with the government's move to limit how much aviation fuel prices can jump—they’re capping those hikes at twenty-five percent.

So, what does that mean for domestic passengers? Well, the fuel surcharge changes based on distance. That’s the new grid.

But the international side? That’s where the charges get steeper. The airline is citing the insane rise in global jet fuel costs. People are seeing those prices nearly double in a single month. We’re talking about nearly USD 195.19 per barrel by the end of March alone, plus those refining margins piling on top.

The international surcharge itself varies wildly depending on where you’re going. It starts at USD 24 for flights heading to SAARC destinations. But for longer hauls—think North America or Australia—that climbs up to USD 280.

Europe, including the UK, gets the updated rate starting April 10th.

Air India themselves said this new international pricing doesn't completely cover the massive fuel increase. They admitted they’re still absorbing a chunk of the cost, of course.

Tickets bought before the new dates? They shouldn't face this new surcharge unless you actually change your booking and the fare needs recalculating.

And they plan to keep watching things. The airline mentioned they’ll review these surcharge levels again later, depending on how the fuel market and the general travel conditions shift. Just keeps moving.
