Ashutosh Gowariker: Acting, Directing, and Future Projects

Ashutosh Gowariker. You know, the guy who made Panipat . It’s been seven years since that film dropped.

But he hasn't been sitting still. He’s been acting, keeping himself busy. You see him in things like Kaala Paani , Manvat Murders , Ata Thambaycha Naay , April May 99 . And then there’s the recent Prime Video stuff, System .

And now, whispers are getting louder. Reports are floating around that he’s ready for another directorial push. Something bigger.

The talk is that this next project is supposed to be a biopic. About Lala Amarnath. That kind of stuff.

And naturally, Aamir Khan is floated as the potential lead. Farhan Akhtar is also supposedly in the mix, talking about playing a key role.

But Ashutosh himself? He’s being cagey. When he spoke to News18, he admitted he hasn't locked down anyone yet.

“My script is ready,” he said. “But I haven’t been able to cast it. I’m not getting the kind of cast that’s required for a story and a film of that nature.”

It’s that kind of hesitation that sticks with you, right? You want the big story, but the actors just aren't lining up.

Then you look at the reaction. Sonakshi Sinha , who co-starred in System , she jumps in. She laughs, sort of. She says, “He’s sitting there saying he can’t find actors. There are so many good actors around him. Look to the left, sir!” She just laughs. Casting isn’t happening for her either. She mentioned she was actually waiting on a film Ashutosh was directing, but that one just… never materialized.

It’s funny how things shift. He’s talking about wanting to work with him, about wanting to be in his films. He said he wants to work with Sonakshi too. They chatted about working together.

It just shows, doesn't it? The industry is moving fast.

He talks about these acting gigs. He says the scripts coming his way today are just too enticing to refuse. It’s not just a break from directing, though. It’s the sheer volume. The sudden rush of scripts. He likes it. He felt he could do something interesting with those characters.

The frequency of these scripts has really picked up. Before, he’d get scripts, sure. But there wasn't much he felt he could actually do justice to. It’s good that this is happening while he’s still trying to manage his own feature as a director. Making the most of this window, I guess.

You have to remember where he started, though. He didn't jump straight into directing. He was an actor first.

He started out on TV. Things like Kachchi Dhoop , Naam . And then Shah Rukh Khan ’s Circus . That was his entry point.

His real directorial debut, Pehla Nasha , that was a decade later.

He pointed out that the directors didn't really change how he acted. Not much influence on his process, at least.

When he was acting, he was mostly just watching the directors he worked with. That observation, that’s where it helped him eventually make his first film. Pehla Nasha had cameos—Aamir, Shah Rukh, Juhi Chawla, Saif Ali Khan—they were just there.

It’s all a bit messy, isn't it? The acting, the directing, the constant shifting. It’s less about a straight line and more about whatever pulls you next. The industry just keeps throwing these opportunities at you. And sometimes, you just have to react to them.
