Border Tensions and Identity Documents in Hakimpur

The whole situation around Hakimpur border checkpost feels really tense right now. It’s all tied back to the new West Bengal government , the one running under Suvendu Adhikari and their "Detect, Delete and Deport" policy. And it seems to be hitting those alleged Bangladeshi infiltrators in the North 24 Parganas hard.

That checkpost, Hakimpur , is still a massive transit point. Hundreds of Bangladeshis are showing up there, apparently terrified. They’re hoping to get back to Bangladesh, but now there’s this intensified crackdown.

News18 got there. It took them over three hours from Kolkata. What they found was this scene. People arriving at the border since Tuesday, May 26th. They’re being moved. Not just waiting. They’re being shifted straight into holding centers. Some families are even hiding in abandoned, half-built structures near the post. It’s messy.

This isn't new. Hakimpur has seen this before. Back during the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision period, you had similar visuals. People camped near the border for days then too. And the opposition parties then were just accused of ignoring it.

But this time? It looked different. Markedly different.

The people interviewed there? They started talking about the paperwork.

Many claimed they had Indian documents. Aadhaar cards , ration cards , voter IDs . And the kicker is, they alleged these were arranged by local TMC leaders .

Ruby Biwi , she was sitting there with her family. She was from Khulna. She said, “I had the Aadhaar card , the ration card —everything. Those cards were arranged by local TMC leaders . They told us nothing would happen. But now the government has changed. They are saying Bangladeshis can’t stay here anymore. We have to go back.” She added, “We used to live and work in Dum Dum. We got Lakshmir Bhandar and other facilities.”

Santu Mollah , from Jashore. He claimed local political leaders helped them get voter ID cards . He said, “ TMC leaders made voter IDs for us. We got all the facilities. I came here nine years ago, and we voted. Now our names are deleted. Earlier, the local party leaders said nothing would happen, that Didi would win. Now the government changed, and the police action is really strict. That’s why we came here to return.”

Farad Shek was also there. He made similar claims about the paperwork.

Another guy, Aktarul Mollah , from Jashore. He mentioned paying money. He claimed he paid ten thousand rupees to a "dalal" to enter India four years ago.

Sirajul claimed he crossed the border five years ago, after paying six thousand rupees.

These reports really bring out three things from the ground in Hakimpur .

  1. People admitted they paid money to border middlemen or "dalals" just to get across.
  2. Many felt they were protected under the TMC government . They believed that protection was still there. But now, with this new administration, the fear is real. Stronger enforcement.
  3. A lot of them pointed fingers at local TMC leaders . They said these leaders helped them get Aadhaar and voter IDs . And that, in turn, helped them become part of the party’s electoral support base.

It’s all turning into a political confrontation over who gets to stay and who doesn't. The BJP has been accusing the Trinamool Congress for years about using these infiltrators as a vote bank. Now these stories from the border, these claims about identity documents, they just make that political fight hotter.</p
