Cabinet Formation and Social Representation in Karnataka Politics

It’s all about forming the new Cabinet. Who gets what portfolios. And who gets those key organizational appointments in the state.

There’s a lot of speculation too. About bringing in one or more deputy chief ministers.

That date looms.

So, the big sticking point? The Cabinet formula is still hanging there.

He made it clear in Kalaburagi. Discussions about the number of ministers, the deputy chief ministers, and important chairmanships won't even start until a formal proposal is actually submitted.

“No proposal has come yet,” Kharge said. “Once the proposal comes, then we will discuss how many ministers to appoint. Whether we need deputy chief ministers. And if important chairmanships should be created.”

He hinted that Cabinet formation might happen in phases.

“We don’t know if they will propose eight or ten ministers,” he added. “Once the proposal comes, we’ll consider that. Another phase of expansion could follow later.”

ANI also reported that they expect talks to cover deputy chief ministers.

Meanwhile, there’s this whole side of demands. Several Congress leaders and various caste groups are pushing hard for representation in the top posts.

News agency PTI picked up on this.

He said discussions about broader social representation in the government were expected soon.

“Discussions regarding broader social representation will take place today or tomorrow,” he quoted.

It’s not just one group talking. Leaders from different districts are intensifying their efforts to get representation in the ministry.

Leaders from the Kolar district, for instance, reportedly met Shivakumar. They demanded representation for the Scheduled Castes. Vokkaligas. Regional communities. A whole mix.

“The high command will decide how many leaders get sworn in. And whether there will be deputy chief ministers or not,” he stated.

He stressed that the Council of Ministers must be formed keeping in view “social justice, caste, community and regional balance.”

The focus is definitely shifting.

Some MLAs are also travelling to Delhi. Sharan Prakash Patil. Raghavendra Hitnal. Basanagouda Daddesh. They are meeting the leadership there.

Then there’s Siddaramaiah’s future role. That’s another big thing being watched. What happens to him after Shivakumar takes the top spot?

Naseer Hussain talked about this too. He said Siddaramaiah remains deeply interested in state politics. He thinks he’ll keep playing an active role, guiding the party and the government.

“He said he has always been interested in state politics. He never thought about national politics in that way,” Hussain noted.

And he added, “The more active he remains, the more it will help the Congress party and the government.”

All these factors—the caste equations, the regional wants, the internal power centers—are being weighed. Monday’s Delhi meeting is expected to be crucial. It’s going to shape the structure of the new Karnataka government before that June 3 swearing-in ceremony. It feels like the real decision point is right there.
