CBI Recreates Crime Scene After Twisha Sharma's Death

A fortnight after Twisha Sharma died, the CBI decided to go back and recreate the crime scene. It wasn’t a casual visit. A team of about a dozen sleuths went to the residence of Giribala Singh, Twisha’s mother-in-law and former judge. They spent nearly three hours there, trying to rebuild what happened.

Samarth Singh, Twisha’s husband and one of the accused, was brought along. So were Giribala and Samarth. Just the three of them at the spot of the alleged tragedy.

The family, Twisha’s side, seemed to settle a bit. They welcomed the CBI’s "scientific probe." Navnidhi Sharma, her father, told CNN News18 they couldn’t talk much about the evidence right now, citing the Supreme Court order. But they said they had faith in the CBI, hopeful for justice.

What the agency was really trying to figure out was the exact sequence of things leading up to Twisha’s death. The story they were chasing involved Samarth. He was allegedly taken up to the rooftop by the CBI, where Twisha supposedly used a gymnastic belt to hang herself.

The CBI asked Samarth to tell them exactly how he found the body. How he brought it down.

They used a ligature, something like that gymnastic belt, to hang a dummy. This dummy weighed roughly the same as Twisha.

Samarth had claimed he brought the body down. But the recreation forced them to look closer. Could a man of Samarth’s build and height actually manage lowering a 70 kg dead weight all by himself? That number came from the post-mortem.

Samarth had also mentioned that Giribala Singh untied the knot around Twisha’s neck while he was bringing the body down. Giribala was there, showing the team how she managed to undo that knot, using the dummy.

Then there were the injuries. The initial report listed marks on Twisha’s ring finger, left forearm, hand, and shoulder. They all happened before death, ante mortem. Bhopal’s police commissioner, Sanjay Yadav, called those injuries "simple."

But the family had a different story. They claimed Twisha also had an injury on her scalp. The CBI used the dummy to test if those injuries could have happened while the body was being brought down the stairs. Giribala and Samarth were questioned about how those specific marks appeared.

Now, the real work is matching up what Giribala and Samarth said to the police against what they said during this recreation. The investigators are looking for any slip-ups. Any inconsistencies in the timeline they laid out.

Those two are due in court tomorrow, as their CBI custody is wrapping up. The agency is likely to ask for fresh custody for them, based on the joint interrogation they just did. It’s a messy process, you know. Just trying to piece together what actually went down.
