CCTV Camera and Cross-Border Espionage Investigation

A CCTV camera . Mounted up on a highway somewhere in Punjab. It turned into the focus of a massive espionage investigation. Cross-border surveillance. Suspected Pakistani handlers involved.

The Punjab Police arrested a guy named Baljit Singh. He lives in Pathankot. They accused him of something serious. Secretly watching the Indian Army and paramilitary forces. Specifically near that sensitive Pathankot-Jammu corridor. And then sharing that footage with people linked to Pakistan.

Investigators are pointing toward a new way of doing things. Low-cost surveillance. High impact. Using those cheap, internet-enabled devices everyone has around.

Where did it all happen? Baljit Singh, from Chakk Dhariwal village in Pathankot. He allegedly set up an internet camera. It was placed near a shop, right by a bridge. This spot was on National Highway-44. That’s the route. The one the Army and paramilitary convoys use constantly between Pathankot and Jammu.

The setup itself was strategic. They suspect the camera was positioned perfectly. To catch the real-time movement. Defence vehicles. Personnel. Moving toward Jammu and Kashmir. The live feed? Allegedly sent straight to handlers based in Pakistan.

It wasn't about breaking into a military base. That’s not what they think. It was about using what was commercially available. An internet camera. Something you can buy easily. And stream the movement. Real time. Handlers sitting outside India watching troop movements.

Officials think the spot was chosen because convoys just flow through there. It’s a strategic stretch of road. Connecting Punjab to Kashmir.

Security experts are getting worried about this stuff. Ordinary digital devices. Wi-Fi cameras. Drones. Mobile apps. They’re being used for gathering intelligence. And now, the police suspect the CCTV feed itself was the actual surveillance tool.

The investigation is now digging deeper. They’re looking at Singh’s communication. Money trails. Any links to a bigger espionage network operating across the border states.

There’s chatter about money too. A Times of India report mentioned that Singh allegedly received about forty thousand rupees from some unknown person in Dubai. For running this whole operation.

Baljit Singh himself allegedly admitted it during questioning. He confessed to installing the camera earlier this year. And then sharing access to the live feed. The police managed to recover the equipment from him when they caught him.

What’s next? Now the focus shifts. Identifying those overseas contacts. The communication lines. Who else was involved in setting up or running this whole setup.

This arrest happens right in the middle of a lot of tension. There’s been a wave of espionage crackdowns across North India over the last year. Punjab Police and central agencies have been warning constantly. About Pakistan-linked operatives. They try to gather intel. About military positions. Troop movements. Using local people. Social media contacts. All those digital surveillance tools.

Is this just one small operation? Or is it part of something much bigger? Investigators are trying to figure that out. Whether this Pathankot case was isolated. Or if it fits into a wider network targeting those defence movement corridors.

Pathankot itself is a huge deal. Strategically important. Because it sits right on the border with Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir. Critical defence infrastructure is there. It’s a major transit point for troops moving around.

The area has always been under intense scrutiny. Ever since that terrible 2016 terror attack at the Pathankot Air Force Station. Things have been watched very closely since then.
