DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah: Shift in Congress Leadership

DK Shivakumar landed in New Delhi Thursday. Second time this week. It happened just hours after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah handed in his resignation. That sets up a real shift in the state Congress unit leadership.

Siddaramaiah himself made it to the capital later that night. His flight got diverted to Jaipur because of the heavy rain. Just another complication.

While everyone is watching, Shivakumar’s spot as the next chief minister seems almost locked in. But Siddaramaiah made it clear that the final call belongs to the Congress high command. He said that’s where the decision has to rest.

Before anything official happened in Bengaluru, both men were pulled into the national scene. A bunch of meetings, just a series of them, at the Congress headquarters. Rahul Gandhi was there. Mallikarjun Kharge, the AICC president. K C Venugopal, the general secretary. And Randeep Surjewala, the Karnataka in-charge.

What’s actually going to be talked about? It’s the new CLP leader . Who gets into the cabinet. And the whole organizational shakeup in the state unit. Shivakumar, currently holding the post of the Pradesh Committee chief, is right in the middle of all that.

The CLP is supposed to elect its leader first. That person then claims the government before the Governor steps in. Party insiders are hinting that we might see some clarity on the whole transition in the next few days.

Siddaramaiah submitted the resignation on Thursday afternoon at Lok Bhavan. Special Secretary Prabhu Shankar received it, because the Governor wasn't there.

Earlier that day, Siddaramaiah told his cabinet colleagues. A breakfast meeting at his place. They all seemed to aGree that Shivakumar would take over, following the party line.

But when he spoke to the reporters later, he didn't actually back it up. He just said, “Whoever the legislature party and the high command decide will be the chief minister.” A bit of deflection, maybe.

When asked directly about Shivakumar getting the job, his brother, D K Suresh, stepped in. He just said, “Let us wait for the party’s decision.”

It’s complicated. Sources are whispering that the leadership offered Siddaramaiah a bigger role nationally, maybe a Rajya Sabha seat. But Siddaramaiah hasn't accepted that offer yet.

He remains in Karnataka politics, he says. Till his very last breath. He mentioned he resigned because of a suggestion from the high command. He added he doesn’t want the Rajya Sabha seat. He stays in the state politics until the end. A very stubborn stance, maybe.
