Donald Trump on Iran Peace Talks and the Threat of War

Donald Trump was talking about the Iran peace talks on Thursday. He said they are right on the borderline. A possible deal, or renewed strikes.

He had earlier claimed the negotiations were in their final stages. Now he’s warning that the window for diplomacy is closing fast.

“It’s right on the borderline, believe me,” he told reporters at Joint Base Andrews, near Washington.

Then came the pressure point. “If we don’t get the right answers, it goes very quickly. We’re all ready to go. We have to get the right answers—it would have to be a complete 100% good answers. If we do, we save a lot of time, energy and lives,” he added.

The deal, he implied, could be finalized “very quickly,” maybe in a few days. But that depends entirely on Tehran providing “100% good answers.”

He spoke about the war itself. He admitted he had no choice because Iran was working toward nuclear weapons. But he stressed that this whole mission would end soon. “One way or the other.”

He shifted focus to the immediate physical threat. Oil. “Oil is going to come tumbling down. We have 1600 ships in the Strait that are loaded up with oil that are going to be coming out very soon,” Trump said.

“We have to open the Strait of Hormuz. We are going to give it one shot. We are not in a hurry,” he insisted.

Meanwhile, Iran responded. On Wednesday, they stated they were examining a new proposal the United States sent over, trying to end the war.

Esmaeil Baqaei, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, said Tehran had “received the points of view of the American side” and they were looking at them.

But the demands stuck. Iran reiterated what they needed: the release of frozen assets, and ending the US blockade of Iranian ports.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Tehran’s chief negotiator, had made sharper remarks earlier. He accused Washington of trying to restart the war, especially after Trump warned about fresh attacks unless Iran aGreed to a deal.

Ghalibaf warned that Iran would give a “forceful response.” The Revolutionary Guards said that any new strikes would just cause conflict to spread far beyond the Middle East.

Ghalibaf continued, pointing to the situation. “The enemy’s movements, both overt and clandestine, show that despite economic and political pressure, it has not abandoned its military objectives and is seeking to start a new war.”
