Enforcement Directorate Raids, Political Fallout, and Police Scrutiny in Kerala

The Enforcement Directorate hit the ground running on Wednesday. They conducted searches across Kerala. Not just random places. They hit multiple spots. One of those locations was the rented house of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

It was a big move. Politically sensitive, you know?

The raids weren't random, though. They tied directly into the messy Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited , or CMRL , case. That case, which involves heavy financial dealings. Specifically, the links to his daughter Veena Thaikkandiyil’s firm, Exalogic Solutions Pvt. Ltd .

The central agency also didn't stop there. They checked Vijayan’s other rented residence in Thiruvananthapuram too. Where he had recently moved. It felt like a sweep. A deep dive.

Veena Thaikkandiyil was understood to be living there as well. So the focus was clearly on that nexus. The Exalogic Solutions investigation. That’s where the real money trail seemed to be.

This all happened just a day after a major legal setback. The Kerala High Court had refused to quash the ED’s investigation into CMRL . That was a huge blow to the company and everyone involved.

Justice TR Ravi dismissed a bunch of petitions. Petitions filed by CMRL and four of its senior officials. They were challenging the Enforcement Case Information Report, the ECIR , that the ED had registered. It just muddied the water further.

But the core issue wasn't just the court battle.

It was the political heat.

This whole situation, even without directly naming Vijayan in every line, became one of the most explosive controversies during his time as Chief Minister. Allegations started swirling about payments. CMRL allegedly paid Exalogic Solutions without any corresponding services being delivered.

That triggered a massive political confrontation in Kerala. Opposition parties started throwing accusations around. They kept pointing fingers at Vijayan’s family. Suggesting they were benefiting from these questionable financial transactions.

It became a key flashpoint. A constant source of friction in state politics. Rivals kept raising this issue against the then Left government. It just kept burning.

CMRL and its officials had fought back in court. They argued that the ED didn't have jurisdiction. They claimed no scheduled offense under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the PMLA , had actually been established.

People who approached the court to make those arguments included the CMRL Managing Director, SN Sasidharan Kartha. The Chief Financial Officer, KS Suresh Kumar. Senior Manager NC Chandrashekharan. And Senior Officer Anju Rachael Kuruvila. They all put their names forward.

And there was history here, too. The ED investigation itself had caused trouble before. Earlier, three company officials had appeared before the agency. They alleged illegal detention during questioning. That kind of thing always sparks controversy.

Following those allegations, the Kerala High Court stepped in. In June 2024, the court directed the ED to preserve the CCTV visuals from those interrogation proceedings. A small victory, maybe. But it didn't stop the investigation.

And it wasn't just the ED looking into things. The Serious Fraud Investigation Office, the SFIO , was also probing the matter. So it was a two-front operation.

Tuesday’s order, though, shifted the dynamic. It effectively cleared the path. It let the ED continue its money laundering investigation into those controversial transactions. The momentum kept going.

Meanwhile, the political temperature was rising even faster. The ED action came right into a period of heightened political tensions in Kerala. There were fresh controversies already bubbling up involving cases linked to the previous Vijayan administration.

Something else was happening in the background, a completely separate, but equally volatile, story.

On Tuesday, there was another major development involving the police. Five police personnel who were attached to Vijayan during the Nava Kerala Yatra assault case were suspended. This followed findings from a Special Investigation Team, or SIT .

The SIT reportedly found serious issues. They looked into how force was used. It focused on the incident in Alappuzha back in December 2023.

The SIT concluded that the officers had unlawfully used force. They attacked Youth Congress and KSU workers during protests. It was physical assault. Visuals of the incident had caused outrage back then. They showed security personnel physically attacking black flag protesters.

The investigation also pointed fingers at senior police officer MR Ajith Kumar. There were allegations that he tried to influence or derail the entire probe. It wasn't just about the protests. It was about internal maneuvering.

This whole picture—the financial probes and the police actions—it layered itself over the existing political friction. It made the atmosphere incredibly charged.

It wasn't just one story unfolding. It was a tangled web of money, power, and public trust. The ED raids, the court challenges, the political accusations, and the police scrutiny. All of it feeding into one massive, messy narrative about power dynamics in Kerala. It was chaotic. It was intensely political. And it kept escalating.
