Enforcement Directorate Sanctioned Against Sandip Ghosh

The West Bengal government finally gave the Green light. They sanctioned the Enforcement Directorate , the ED , to start prosecuting Sandip Ghosh. He was the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. That’s what Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Monday.

It was a big move. A kind of noble step, Adhikari claimed in a post. He said he felt fortunate to take it. In connection with the brutal rape and murder of their sister, Abhaya, which happened at the hospital on August 9, 2024. The sanction was given so the ED could take legal action against Ghosh.

Adhikari was pretty clear about his frustration, though. He strongly disapproved of how the previous Trinamool Congress government handled things. He argued that they had forcibly stalled the investigation for ages. But the core message was simple: no one is above the law. Truth can’t just disappear forever.

“I want the real culprits behind Abhaya’s tragedy to be found,” he posted. “They need the harshest punishment. The people of Bengal need to see justice served.” There was a plea there too, a prayer for Abhaya’s soul to find peace.

The official order itself laid out the groundwork. The Governor, RN Ravi, was the competent authority. He examined the FIRs and records. He decided that Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, should face prosecution.

The legal backing was complex. It cited sections from the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, the Prevention of Corruption Act, and crucially, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. It basically said the Governor sanctioned the prosecution based on those laws.

The whole thing stems from that awful incident—the rape and murder of a trainee doctor whose body was found in the hospital seminar room. It caused massive protests. And right after that, Sanjay Roy, a volunteer at the hospital, got arrested in connection with the crime.

But the story doesn't end with the immediate aftermath. Things got tangled up later.

On November 29, 2025, the CBI finally filed a chargesheet. It wasn't just about the murder. It involved financial irregularities at the hospital. Sandip Ghosh was named, along with some other names—Dr. Ashish Kumar Pandey, Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan—for financial misconduct. That investigation came after the Calcutta High Court made a ruling.

Ghosh wasn't just facing murder charges. He was also being questioned about the other side of things. The CBI even ran polygraph tests on him as part of the probe.

Then came the bail. The Sealdah Court granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, and also to Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station. That happened after a hiccup. The CBI simply failed to file the chargesheet within the ninety days the law required. A delay, you know? It just threw the whole timeline off.
