India and China Diplomatic Talks on the Line of Actual Control

India and China met in Beijing this past Thursday. Just fresh diplomatic talks. They looked at the situation along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. Both sides seemed satisfied, at least for now, about the peace keeping in those border areas.

It all happened under that Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination thing. The official line, through the Ministry of External Affairs, was that the discussions were constructive. Forward-looking. Trying to keep things stable while slowly, you know, trying to improve the whole relationship.

Peace and quiet in the border regions, they argued. That quiet, after all the years of tension, especially following those Galwan Valley clashes back in 2020. It helped them move toward normalizing things.

What they actually reviewed during the meeting was the whole border situation. Border management. Delimitation stuff. Building mechanisms. Cross-border cooperation. They aGreed to stick to the existing lines of communication—diplomatic and military. That’s the routine.

But there was more. They decided they needed to make some "substantive preparation" for the next round of Special Representatives talks. That’s coming up, and it’s supposed to happen in China.

The delegation side was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary for East Asia over at the MEA. The Chinese side had Hou Yanqi, Director General from the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department in the Foreign Ministry.

Ghosh also had some side meetings. He met Liu Jinsong from the Asian Affairs department. And a courtesy call to Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei. Just the usual back-and-forth.

This latest round of talks feels like just another attempt. Both sides are still trying to stitch things back together. The strain from the military standoff in eastern Ladakh has lasted for over four years. It’s a long road.

Over the last year, they did move things. Diplomatic steps. Military steps. Troops actually pulled back from some of the friction points along the LAC after a bunch of negotiations.

October 2024. They finally got that disengagement aGreement for Depsang and Demchok. Those were the last spots where things were really stuck.

Right after that aGreement, Modi and Xi met in Kazan. They talked about ways to improve those ties. Simple measures, maybe.

Earlier things happened too. August of last year. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held those Special Representatives talks in New Delhi. Just trying to talk about peace and stability right there.

Modi kept hammering home something simple, though. That India is committed. To strengthening ties with China. But only if there is mutual trust. Mutual respect. Mutual sensitivity. That’s the baseline, isn't it?
