India-Iran Cooperation on Chabahar Port Amid Sanctions

Friday. Iran pushed India, urging them to keep pouring money into the Chabahar Port . Even with the growing pressure from US sanctions, the Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, framed the project as something really important—a huge symbol of cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi.

He basically hoped India would stick with the investment, ignoring the difficulties the sanctions were causing.

Araghchi talked about how India played a big role in getting the port set up. He called for more real engagement between the two nations. But there was an undercurrent there, too. He admitted that the pace had slowed down. American sanctions on Iran, that was the roadblock.

“Chabahar port is one of the symbols of cooperation between Iran and India,” he said. Then he added the kicker: “but progress has slowed down due to American sanctions.”

He painted a picture, really grand. He said this port would be like a golden gate. For India. To get into Central Asia, the Caucasus, and then Europe. And also, for Europeans, Central Asians, and everyone else to reach the Indian Ocean.

He really wanted India to keep working on it. He said, “I hope that Indians would continue their work in Chabahar Port so it would be fully developed at the service of the interests of India and other countries around.”

It felt like a diplomatic plea, mixed with genuine hope.

Araghchi also took a moment to praise India’s handling of things, especially amid all the chaos happening in West Asia right now. A balanced diplomatic approach, he noted.

This whole conversation happened weeks after that US sanctions waiver linked to Chabahar Port finally expired on April 26th of this year. That waiver had given India the Green light to keep developing things there, even with the sanctions on Iran in place.

Chabahar itself is strategically vital for India. It gives them a direct route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan entirely. That access is huge.

Back in May 2024, India signed a ten-year deal with Iran. It was about operating the Shahid Beheshti terminal at the port. India took operational control. Part of their bigger plans for regional links.

India really sees Chabahar as a massive trade and connectivity project in the region. It’s about opening up trade routes to Afghanistan and Central Asia. It strengthens that whole International North-South Transport Corridor.

It’s also seen as India’s strategic move. An alternative to Pakistan’s Gwadar Port. And a counterweight to China’s growing presence everywhere.

It sits right near the Strait of Hormuz. That puts it in a really important maritime zone, tied up with global oil and trade routes.

Araghchi wasn't just talking about ports. He also pushed India to step up its diplomatic game in the Middle East. He wanted India to help keep regional stability. Things are incredibly tense right now with the Iran-US-Israel conflict looming.

The Iranian Foreign Minister’s comments just reflected Tehran’s focus. They want that close cooperation with New Delhi to keep going, no matter the geopolitical pressure or the sanctions headaches.

The Chabahar project, over the years, has just remained one of the most important symbols of the strategic bond between India and Iran. Even with all the delays and the sanctions hanging over things, both sides keep talking about it. An essential link for trade. For transport. For regional connection.

Iran has kept pushing India, always encouraging them to dig deeper into this. They see it as good for everyone. For access to Central Asia and Afghanistan. It just keeps circling back to that shared regional interest.
