India-Italy Upgrade: A Special Strategic Partnership

Modi and Meloni. They announced something big on Wednesday. They upgraded the relationship between India and Italy. It’s now a “Special Strategic Partnership.” That’s the highest level they’ve managed so far.

The whole thing was about a roadmap. Trade, obviously. Artificial intelligence . Defense cooperation. Connectivity. Emerging tech. A lot of stuff.

Meloni, speaking in Rome, called the visit historic. First time an Indian Prime Minister had been to Italy in twenty-six years. That stuck with everyone.

They said ties have been deepening for years. Through meetings. High-level stuff. They launched a partnership in New Delhi back in 2023. And they signed that Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025-2029 during the G20 in Brazil last year. It wasn’t just a quick chat. It was steady work.

The focus shifted quickly to the trade deal. They hammered home the need to finish that India-European Union free trade aGreement.

Modi thanked Italy for backing it. Said they needed to get it moving fast so businesses could actually see the benefit.

Italy, Meloni said, aiming for massive growth. They want bilateral trade with India to hit twenty-two billion euros by 2029. That’s up from the current fourteen billion. Big numbers.

She pointed out how they fit together. India’s digital stuff. Innovation. It complements Italy’s manufacturing muscle.

Modi countered that there are already connections. More than eight hundred Italian companies are already playing a role in India’s growth story. Interesting.

Technology and innovation really came to the forefront. That was a central pillar.

They planned an India-Italy Innovation Centre. New Delhi. To link up startups, universities, research, and industries. A hub.

They talked about a few big areas of cooperation.

  • AI. Meloni stressed that AI has to be responsible. Focused on human needs. Regulation, rules, security. They have to go together.
  • The Italian PM also brought up Italy’s G7 presidency. And India’s AI summit. A shared moment.
  • Defense and security. Modi stressed that this reflects a deep mutual trust.
  • The defense industry roadmap opened up pathways.
  • They also touched on the maritime side. Logistics. Shipping. The blue economy.
  • Then there was the big corridor. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. IMEC. Both leaders strongly backed it.
  • Meloni felt that corridor could unlock huge trade and connectivity between Europe, the Middle East, and India.
  • They also talked about connecting the Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific regions. That geographical link.
  • Terrorism came up too. Modi said terrorism is a serious challenge for humanity.
  • He insisted that fighting it means dismantling the financial networks too. Responsible democracies have to do more than just condemn.
  • They discussed the ongoing wars and tensions in various places.
  • But the consensus, it kept coming back, was dialogue. Diplomacy. That’s the only way forward.
  • Meloni pushed for maintaining a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
  • They also touched on culture. The 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations is coming up in 2027. They plan to mark it as the “India-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism.”
  • Modi mentioned the cultural exchange. Growing interest in Indian yoga, Ayurveda, cuisine. In Italy.

Meloni wrapped up the presser with a simple line. The Hindi proverb: “Parishram Hi Safalta Ki Kunji Hai.” Hard work is the key to success.

And then, the bit that pulled everyone out of the serious stuff. The whole thing got lighter.

Modi gave Italy toffees. Meloni called them a “very, very good toffee.” A moment of pure, silly interaction.

Modi just replied, “Melody.” It brought back that silly “Melodi” meme, combining their names. Parle Products actually got thanked for taking the Indian candy brand to the global stage. Just a weird little footnote to all the strategy.
