Indian-Origin Family Elected Mayors in the United Kingdom

A family from Rohtak , Haryana , just made some noise in the United Kingdom . It’s a pretty rare thing, actually. Both a mother and her son got elected as mayors in the same week.

Tushar Kumar , 23, is the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the UK now. He got elected Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council back on May 13.

Then, just a few days later, May 20th. His mother, Parveen Rani , was elected. She became the first Indian-origin Mayor of Hertsmere Borough Council .

The whole thing happened fast.

This family had moved to the UK back in 2013, away from Rohtak. Their roots, though, they still hold tight to Haryana . They trace everything back to Rohna village in Sonipat district .

When asked about the move, Tushar’s father , Sunil Dahiya , said they didn't move with any grand political plans. Nothing fixed in mind.

“We didn’t come with anything specific in mind when we moved to the UK in 2013,” Dahiya told PTI on Sunday. “Tushar was only ten years old then.”

But the simultaneous elevation of both Tushar and Parveen—that was a proud moment. For the family. For the Indian-origin community there.

Dahiya pointed out that both Tushar and Parveen had always been interested in community stuff. Social work .

Tushar, he said, got into community service early. It set him up for local politics. He was already involved.

He mentioned Tushar was just twenty when he first became a councillor while he was still studying in college in London. A Labour councillor, that.

He spoke about the youth. He felt young people shouldn't wait around for an age to get involved in public service.

“His message to the youth is that they can jump into public or community service without waiting,” Dahiya said. “They don't have to wait for a certain age.”

Of course, Tushar still cares about his background. He values his heritage and culture.

Even though they’ve been in the UK for over ten years, the connection to Haryana hasn't faded. They still own a house back in Rohtak where some family members live.

“We always stay connected with our roots,” Dahiya said. “We visit our hometown every year.”

Tushar himself seems to carry both worlds. He feels pride in his Indian background, sure. But he also feels that wonderful, diverse British town he serves. It’s a cultural melting pot.

“While he is very proud of his Indian heritage ,” Dahiya continued, “at the same time, he is equally proud of the wonderful, diverse British town that he serves.”

They’ve done more than just live there. They’ve been active in promoting Hindi and culture in the UK. Tushar and his mother used to teach Hindi for free to kids born and raised there.

There’s also this charity thing. Tushar is connected to an organization called the Hindi Shiksha Parishad .

Parveen Rani’s role before becoming mayor was pretty big too. She was a Cabinet Member dealing with Streetscene , Parks , Leisure , and Culture . Deputy mayor of Hertsmere. Global Envoy for Film and Television.

Tushar went to King’s College London . He was studying politics, doing his BSc. He became a councillor at twenty.

His father noted that Tushar is expected to start his Master’s deGree later this year. And his younger son is at King’s College too. He’s a trustee in the King’s College Students’ Union.

Parveen Rani, Dahiya said, remains deeply committed. To community service. To education. To bringing people together, no matter where they come from, or what generation they are in.
