Karnataka Congress Leadership Shift: Speculation and Power Dynamics

Amid all this noise about a potential shift in leadership in Karnataka, there’s this chatter. Congress MLA and Siddaramaiah’s camp leader, HC Balakrishna, told CNN-News18 something pretty pointed. He basically said Siddaramaiah is still the central figure, right? Essential for the 2028 polls.

But then there’s the other angle. Balakrishna hinted that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar could eventually take the top spot. A smooth handover, that’s what he suggested.

This whole thing is bubbling up because there have been these marathon meetings. Congress high command and the state’s top leadership, all happening in Delhi. That’s when the speculation really kicked up over a power transition in Karnataka.

Things are moving fast. PTI reports suggest Siddaramaiah is probably going to host cabinet folks for breakfast on Thursday. Maybe even meet the Governor. All this just fuels the whispers about a possible resignation.

Balakrishna’s comments, though, they carry weight. He strongly backed Siddaramaiah’s importance inside the Congress. Said the veteran leader is critical no matter what happens.

“Without Siddaramaiah, there is no Congress. He is very important for the 2028 polls. We can’t fight Assembly polls without him," he put it out there.

And then he pivoted. He suggested Siddaramaiah should just step down happily. He needs to facilitate a smooth transfer to Shivakumar.

“Siddaramaiah should step down happily and support DK Shivakumar," he told CNN-News18.

This is significant because Balakrishna isn't some outsider. He’s seen as close to Siddaramaiah. Part of that inner circle in the Karnataka Congress.

He also touched on something deeper. A possible power-sharing arrangement. Trying to balance out caste and community equations within the state Congress structure.

“After DK Shivakumar becomes the Chief Minister, there will be four deputy chief ministers from all communities," he mentioned.

This comes right when there are talks inside the Congress about representation. Who gets what spot if there’s a reshuffle?

There are demands, you know. From certain AHINDA leaders, minorities, backward classes, Dalits. They want one of their own in a key post if the leadership changes.

There have been demands for a “Dalit chief minister” too. Names like Mallikarjun Kharge and G Parameshwara floated around in the political discussions.

But the ultimate call seems to be up to the top. Balakrishna was clear about that.

“In the interest of the party, the High Command will take an appropriate decision when it comes to the next KPCC president," he stated.

Speculation about changes is just growing. It’s all about those organizational shifts in the Karnataka Congress right now.

Meanwhile, Shivakumar, who’s already Deputy CM and KPCC president, stayed in Delhi. He revised his travel plans amidst all this back-and-forth.

Balakrishna brought up those Delhi meetings. The ones between the Karnataka leadership and the Congress high command.

“Yesterday’s meeting was good, and Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar, and everyone will abide by High Command’s decision," he added.

And those meetings? Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal, and Randeep Singh Surjewala were all involved.

The reports from those talks really intensified the feeling. Speculation about a change of guard became, well, very much likely.

But the Congress, they officially pushed back on that kind of narrative. They dismissed the buzz as “mere speculation.” They kept saying the focus was on the upcoming Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections.

Yet, the whole situation keeps circling back. That alleged “rotational chief minister formula.” It’s been at the heart of Karnataka Congress politics since 2023.

Remember the May 2023 election? Stiff competition between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for CM. Eventually, Siddaramaiah got the top job. Shivakumar got Deputy CM.

There were widespread reports back then. That the leadership had worked out a compromise. Shivakumar would take over after two-and-a-half years. But that arrangement never actually got confirmed by the party. It just hangs there, unspoken.
