Kerala Political Suspense: The Race for the Next Chief Minister

Ten days after the UDF, the Congress-led front stormed back into Kerala with a massive win. But the real mess? Who’s going to be the next chief minister? That question just hangs there.

The suspense drags on. It just keeps going until the Congress Legislature Party meeting in Thiruvananthapuram. Right now, it’s just three names floating around: VD Satheesan , KC Venugopal , and Ramesh Chennithala .

Signals from Delhi, even Thursday morning, were just mixed. Nothing solid.

KC Venugopal , the Congress MP and AICC general secretary, was seen heading to Rahul Gandhi’s place in New Delhi. Meanwhile, Satheesan was heading to Thiruvananthapuram with his family. Supporters were cheering outside his Aluva home.

Ramesh Chennithala , though, he kept a much calmer public face. Just interacting with reporters outside his house.

The big CLP meeting is set for 1 pm at the KPCC headquarters. That’s supposed to be where the choice happens. The legislature party leader, the likely next CM, is supposed to be picked then.

Why is this so complicated?

The UDF won the Kerala Assembly with a solid two-thirds majority. 102 out of 140 seats. Yet, no quick announcement. Days spent in internal bickering. Lobbying. Damage control. The competing camps are pushing their claims around.

Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and the senior strategists in Delhi? They’ve had multiple rounds of talks. Still no final decision.

This whole thing just shows the cracks inside the party. The suspense has exposed divisions.

Some grassroots workers and UDF allies seem to lean towards Satheesan. But Venugopal’s sudden rise complicates things. He’s suddenly a serious contender.

Then there’s Chennithala. He keeps pushing his long history, his administrative experience.

So, what are the possibilities? Three paths emerge.

Scenario one: Satheesan comes out as the easy choice. Multiple reports suggest he’s the strongest card. People like him. He led the charge against the Left government. Supporters gathered outside his house, shouting things like he was the “guardian of secularism.” Some UDF allies are backing him too.

Kerala Congress (J) chairman PJ Joseph said allies hoped the Congress leadership would listen to them when picking the chief minister.

Some observers suggest Satheesan’s elevation would signal a shift. A generational change in the Kerala Congress. At sixty-one, he’s seen as younger than some of the old guard. An aggressive opposition leader against Pinarayi Vijayan. His supporters point out he predicted the UDF would hit the 100-seat mark. He tied his future to the alliance.

Scenario two: Delhi backs Venugopal for control. This is the organizational angle. Venugopal’s sudden front-running messed up the decision-making process. Rahul Gandhi had a crucial chat with him on Thursday. Speculation runs that the high command might want a trusted organizational hand running things.

As the AICC general secretary, Venugopal holds a huge spot nationally. Close to the central leadership. Choosing him could give the Congress high command tighter grip on Kerala’s government. Especially when factionalism is still a huge worry.

But critics in the state unit argue this is wrong. Venugopal spent years in Delhi. Does he have the grassroots connection Satheesan has?

Still, his name sticks. He kept showing up. Meeting Rahul Gandhi in Delhi even while Kerala leaders gathered for the CLP meeting.

Scenario three: The compromise with Chennithala. This is the veteran route. Political circles are talking about a deal centered on Ramesh Chennithala. His supporters are lobbying hard. They argue his long political and organizational experience makes him the natural pick.

If the Congress leadership is stuck between Satheesan and Venugopal, Chennithala could be the balancing factor. A consensus candidate. Something acceptable to different factions. Analysts say this mirrors the traditional way the high command handles competing camps.

But there’s pushback here too. Younger leaders and other party sections want a change after the UDF’s big victory.

For now, the waiting continues. The newly elected MLAs are sitting in Thiruvananthapuram for the meeting. But the final word? That’s still expected from Delhi.

And until the Congress high command makes a call, Kerala’s biggest political puzzle remains open: Satheesan? Venugopal? Or some unexpected middle ground?
