Khalnayak Returns: The Revival and Sequel Details
The Khal Nayak world is getting a revival, yeah. But bringing Ballu Balram back to the big screen? That’s still in the making.
The sequel to Subhash Ghai’s 1993 action drama was announced recently. Khalnayak Returns . It happened at some big event in Mumbai on April 24th. They also dropped a teaser. Sanjay Dutt back in it as the iconic anti-hero.
That teaser, it hit the internet hard. People were buzzing. They loved the actor’s new look. That menacing screen presence. Plus, the background theme from the original film was back.
But there was a twist. Everyone thought Subhash Ghai would direct this, naturally. Turns out, he isn't going to helm Khalnayak Returns .
Sanjay Dutt wanted someone else. He was keen on Rajkumar Santoshi.
Bollywood Hungama reported that Dutt felt Santoshi had the right touch for this kind of mainstream cinema. Santoshi understood commercial filmmaking. He could do justice to the scale of the project.
A source spilled some details. Sanjay really wanted to work with Santoshi. It was a chance to finally link up with the director. They hadn't done anything together before. So, Dutt met Santoshi and offered him the film.
But Santoshi had other things going on. He politely declined. Why? He was tied up. He was busy finishing up Lahore 1947 , starring Sunny Deol.
The report said he simply didn't have the time for Khalnayak Returns . He was busy writing scripts for Sunny and Aamir too.
Still, Santoshi seemed touched. He appreciated being considered. He actually praised Sanjay Dutt’s new look in the teaser.
He wished him well. But he couldn't take the project. Meanwhile, Sanjay was looking at other directors now.
The teaser itself painted a different picture. It suggested a Ballu Balram who was older. Harder. More dangerous. Sanjay’s look hinted at something shaped by time, by rage, by just surviving. The mood, though? It kept that huge, over-the-top energy of the original film.
You have to remember where this is going. Khalnayak . It came out in '93. Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff were all in it. Subhash Ghai directed it. It became this thing—one of those talked-about action dramas. Sanjay’s Ballu Balram performance? It’s still one of the most memorable things he did.
