KMC Notices Linked to Banerjee Family Properties

Kolkata’s civic body, the KMC , just sent out notices this week. They targeted several properties. Allegedly linked to Banerjee and his family members. Asking for building plans. Everything related. Scrutiny, basically.

This move immediately stirred up trouble inside the ruling party. The KMC itself is run by the Trinamool Congress. So why the civic body suddenly started digging into one of the party’s top leaders? Especially right after the BJP took over West Bengal. It just felt wrong.

News agency PTI reported the notices were sent out for seventeen to twenty properties. Things tied to Banerjee , his relatives, and some company. They wanted to check if the actual construction matched the approved civic plans.

Then there was the reaction from the top. Kolkata Mayor and senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim stepped in. He tried to distance himself from the notices. He argued it wasn't his job. It fell under the executive wing, not elected representatives.

“This doesn’t fall under my jurisdiction,” Hakim told reporters during the Assembly proceedings. “The person who got the notice can explain things better. I can’t comment on a personal issue. I’m just here to explain the laws of the KMC.”

He insisted that elected officials were policy makers. But building approvals, figuring out if structures were illegal—that was the municipal commissioner’s job.

But the issue didn't stop there. It got to Mamata Banerjee . She held a meeting with Hakim and some of the Mayor-in-Council. She looked unhappy about the whole development.

She asked for an explanation. How and why were these notices sent out to properties connected to the Diamond Harbour MP? Hakim apparently told her he had zero prior knowledge about the notices themselves.

The properties they were looking at included Banerjee’s residence at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road. There was also an adjacent building on Kalighat Road. And a few other places.

Civic officials said the notices were issued under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980. That section lets authorities ask for explanations about alleged unauthorized construction. It gives property owners a chance to present their side.

What they were asking for? Approved plans. Documents about construction activity. Clarification on whether permissions were actually obtained for additions or changes. Things like lifts or escalators—whether those were approved too.

The officials said they’ll look at what was submitted. See if there’s any deviation from the approved plans or civic rules.

Meanwhile, the BJP side weighed in. Agnimitra Paul, the state Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister, said Banerjee wasn’t above the law. She claimed they were identifying illegal properties linked to TMC leaders.

“Bring the plans,” she said sharply. “Otherwise, we will take action. You are not above the law.”
