Kusha Kapila: The Shift from Influencer to Actor in Indian Entertainment

Kusha Kapila moving from just influencing to actually acting. It just shows how the whole Indian entertainment scene is shifting, you know? Digital creators are starting to jump into mainstream cinema and those OTT stories. Studios are really starting to look at people who already have big fan bases. Influencers , people with built-in audiences—they’re becoming attractive casting choices.

But the Bollywood actors? They’ve been pushing back hard on this. They argue that casting someone just because they have followers is unfair to the whole craft.

Kusha herself talked about this in a chat with the Hindustan Times. She said, “I feel the actors are right to feel that if the hiring is only happening because of followers. They are right to feel that because they have studied for it. They are the ones who should be leading and fronting projects. 100%”

She countered that argument, though. She said that the argument doesn't really apply to creators who are actually grinding away, really trying to hone their skills.

“If a creator is taking the time out, putting in the effort, going back to school, learning, workshopping—things get different,” she noted. Then she brought up someone else. “Look at somebody like Bhuvan Bam…”

She continued talking about proof of concept. “They are producing their own content, and there is proof of concept. If you are taking out the time, and if one is really putting in the work, things are different. Take the time. It’s not like you have to prove yourself in just five years. An actor can come from anywhere,” she added.

When asked if she was seen more as an actress or just a social media personality, Kusha just smiled. “So, many people definitely recognize me through my projects.”

She talked about her own journey then. “I started my career with Netflix with Ghost Stories… I feel like I’m on a very nicely paced journey. I feel like whenever a bigger opportunity presents itself, I want to be ready for it. I don’t want to be like I’m less. I want to be like ‘I am ready.’ I felt after the Maamla Legal Hai season 2, I would be ready, and I’d be like, ‘bring it on,’” Kusha shared.

It’s about pacing, really. “It is important to pace yourself for a big opportunity rather than get it at a time where you won’t be able to do justice to it. I am liking the pace of how things are going. I’m loving it. Bahut maza aa raha hai.”

For those who don't follow the full story, the transition wasn't a sudden leap. It started with smaller things. She did some smaller appearances in streaming projects first. Then, gradually, she moved into bigger roles. Think about things like Masaba Masaba , and then films and OTT stuff like Plan A Plan B , Selfiee , and Sukhee . A lot of people just saw her in those spaces. It let audiences see her doing actual performances, not just the comic internet stuff they were used to.
