National Commission for Women Intervention in Dowry Death Case

The National Commission for Women, that’s where the heat started. Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar basically went after Twisha Sharma’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh. She slammed him hard over what she called character assassination regarding the deceased model and actor. It all happened after Twisha was found hanging, nearly ten days ago, back in Bhopal, at her matrimonial home. Samarth Singh, her husband, has been missing since then.

The whole thing just got way darker. It wasn't just about the death.

Then the story got really ugly. Twisha’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh—who is one of the accused in that whole dowry death case—started throwing shade. She questioned Twisha’s personality. She brought up some really heavy stuff. Allegations that Twisha had an abortion, something she supposedly chose herself. And that Twisha was suffering from schizophrenia, getting psychiatric treatment.

Rahatkar, the NCW chief, took notice. She didn't hold back. In an interview with NDTV, she called the whole incident "painful and heartbreaking." It hit you hard.

The Commission decided to step in, suo motu cognizance. They asked the authorities for an Action Taken Report. It felt necessary.

She didn't just sit there. Rahatkar made noise. Letters went out. To the Director General of Police in Madhya Pradesh. To the Chief Secretary. They were basically demanding a transparent, fair, speedy investigation.

It’s shocking, really. How can this keep happening? Alleged dowry harassment still running around, even when there are supposed to be legal safeguards for women.

The family, Twisha’s side, they’re screaming about character assassination. They’re also pointing fingers at the police investigation.

Rahatkar was clear about the judge involved. It was condemnable if someone holding a position like that, someone who was a judge, could behave like this. Society expects people in important roles to have some sense, some responsibility. If these allegations against Giribala Singh turn out to be true? Then there needs to be strict action.

Giribala Singh, the accused, got some interim bail back on May 15th. A bond of fifty thousand rupees.

The Commission isn't letting things rest. They told the police they need to look everywhere. CCTV footage. Chats. Call records. Mobile phone data. Financial transactions. All of it needs to be examined.

Rahatkar stressed something important too. The police have to do this investigation without any pressure. No outside influence pushing them around.

Respect. Dignity. That has to start at home. At society. When you have a powerful position, it means nothing unless you have humanity. You have to respect women. Seeing similar things happen before, it just shows.

The family keeps pushing. They allege their in-laws are trying to mess with the investigation. Misusing the whole justice system. They asked for a second post-mortem. The Madhya Pradesh court rejected that plea. Now? They’re looking at taking the High Court for further legal action. That’s the next step.
