Pawan Kalyan on Vijay's Political Victory and Comparisons

Pawan Kalyan, the Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister, recently dropped some pretty candid remarks about Tamil star Vijay’s political victory with TVK. He was talking at some public event, and honestly, he seemed to feel a real mix—admiration, maybe even a little jealousy—watching how easily Vijay managed to snag that big political win in Tamil Nadu.

He was talking about how the campaign felt so effective there. How Vijay’s party just used these kinds of promotional tricks, cutouts and holograms. It seemed way smoother. Kalyan admitted that even though he spent years grinding on the political ground, their approach felt comparatively simpler. But he quickly pulled back, laughing it off. He said he was just joking.

“I look at Tamil politics these days,” he said. “They just did it so carefree. I felt a little jealous. He became Chief Minister using cutouts and holograms happily. I roamed on the streets for fifteen years but… (laughs). I am joking.”

Then he shifted gears. He started thinking about what really matters. You need so much knowledge to say anything. Why did I struggle for fifteen years? Because running a party means you have to understand what lakhs of people expect. That’s the real effort.

But the pressure kept coming. Earlier, when he was talking to his party workers in Mangalagiri, he mentioned getting messages. People comparing his journey to Vijay’s. He dismissed it straight away. He made it clear those comparisons just don’t fit. The political situation in Tamil Nadu is totally different from Andhra Pradesh.

“Ever since those Tamil Nadu elections and him becoming Chief Minister,” he continued, the tone getting a bit sharper. “People are pressuring me. An actor in a neighboring state established a party and became CM. A lot of people have messaged me that I should have done the same in Andhra Pradesh.”

He tried to use a Telugu saying to explain the whole feeling. He compared the chatter to unnecessary excitement over a neighbor’s wedding. Like, you know? Outsiders get overly involved, even though it has nothing to do with them. He said, “Uru lo pelli ki…edo hadavidi antaru kada.” It’s like little kids running around, totally unaware it isn't their family wedding.

He concluded by pushing back on the comparisons. “The situation in Andhra Pradesh is different. I contested in the 2019 election. What did they do? Even the Ministers didn’t stick by me. So, don’t compare,” he finished. It felt like he was trying to shut down the noise, making it clear that the context was completely skewed. A video of that speech has started circulating everywhere now.
