Political Developments and Protocol in West Bengal

It all kicked off Friday, actually. Adhikari got elected as the BJP legislature leader in a meeting. Amit Shah was there, the central observer.

Big ceremony planned for that ground. Things are getting ready for it.

But there’s a whole other layer of mess happening behind the scenes. West Bengal Governor RN Ravi dissolved the Assembly way back on May 7th. And Mamata Banerjee ? She just wouldn't step down.

So she’s still technically in charge. A caretaker, maybe. But that doesn't give her the real power to make big policy calls or actually govern as CM.

No rigid law forcing an outgoing CM to attend the swearing-in of the new one. It’s all about political habit. Courtesy. How the two leaders actually interact.

As a rule, outgoing Chief Ministers show up. It’s about signaling a smooth handover. It’s customary. They want to welcome the new leader. Show the "passing of the torch."

But that doesn't always happen. There have been times when outgoing CMs just skip it. Because of political friction. Strained relations. Health issues. Or just bad scheduling. Absence isn't a breach of protocol, you know. It just happens.
