Political Fallout and Deadlock in Kerala's UDF Chief Minister Selection

The Indian Union Muslim League, that’s the second biggest piece of the Congress-led United Democratic Front, is seriously worried. They’ve warned that holding up the name for Kerala’s next Chief Minister for this long is going to cause real political fallout. Widespread voter dissatisfaction is looming, they said.

The UDF managed to grab a decent chunk, winning 102 out of 140 seats in the May results. But even within that coalition, things are completely deadlocked. Congress can’t aGree on who to pick. It’s stuck between three main names: VD Satheesan , KC Venugopal , and Ramesh Chennithala .

P Abdul Hameed, the general secretary for IUML in Malappuram, was pretty upset about the delay. He spoke on Monday. He said people are complaining everywhere. At weddings, at funerals, everyone is asking why there’s no decision. He claimed this uncertainty is already making party workers and the public unhappy. He warned that if this drags on, there will be serious political repercussions.

“The decision is already delayed,” Hameed told reporters. “If it keeps going, there will be repercussions. We really hope the AICC leadership understands this.”

He pointed out that people across the state are questioning the hold-up. Even women voters from his district are calling party leaders, asking why they were forced to vote for the UDF in the first place.

Kerala is politically different from the rest of North India. Hameed insisted that this kind of prolonged indecision just won't fly with politically aware voters there. The UDF got a huge mandate, sure. But they haven't managed to celebrate it properly because of this CM uncertainty.

There are stories of victory celebrations just not happening. Some elected MLAs are actually being told not to attend public events. They’re worried about the growing dissatisfaction.

The Congress high command is now trying to weigh three different paths. Each one brings serious political risk.

First, there’s VD Satheesan . He has the backing of the IUML and the grassroots supporters. But there’s a snag—he seems resistant to any kind of power-sharing formula.

Then you have KC Venugopal . He seems favored by the central leadership. He has the support of a lot of Congress MLAs, maybe forty-three. But picking him means triggering two by-elections. He’s a sitting Lok Sabha MP, which complicates things.

And then there’s Ramesh Chennithala . He represents seniority, experience. He’s the third person in line, but still not settled.

This whole situation complicates things for the Congress leadership, especially with the IUML’s public stance.

The IUML has reportedly pushed for VD Satheesan . They cite him as the face of the mass campaign, the one who really revived the party on the ground. That clashes directly with what the high command seems to prefer— KC Venugopal , who is closer to Rahul Gandhi.

The backlash is hitting hard. IUML leaders in Malappuram are hearing the discontent at every social gathering. The warning is that this historic mandate is just getting wasted inside these internal fights.

The momentum is gone. The IUML is pointing out that celebrations have stalled. MLAs are avoiding public appearances just to dodge the anger of the voters.

Now the Congress has made a move. They’ve summoned former KPCC presidents and veteran leader A.K. Antony to Delhi. They want urgent talks on May 12th. The goal is to sort out this mess and stop the alliance from falling apart.

It feels less like a simple political choice and more like a struggle against fragmentation. The uncertainty is palpable.
