Political Interference and Electoral Manipulation in Gilgit-Baltistan

General Asim Munir, the Army Chief, is facing serious accusations. They say he orchestrated a crackdown in Gilgit-Baltistan right before the June 7 polls. Opposition leaders and local groups are screaming that the military establishment actively blocked campaigning and messed with the whole electoral process. It all centers on letting candidates linked to the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, LeT, get into the region.

Intelligence sources are pointing fingers. They claim the military establishment backed candidates from the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League, PMML. This group is seen as a political front tied directly to Hafiz Saeed, the founder of LeT. All this happened in Gilgit-Baltistan, a place that’s strategically vital and mostly Shia.

This development has really spooked local political groups. They are worried sick. They allege this move isn't just about elections. It’s about completely reshaping the region’s political and ideological scene. Fielding these PMML-linked candidates in GB, they fear it will cause massive sectarian polarization. The Shia communities there make up a huge chunk of the population.

Opposition parties, especially those tied to PTI, have made it clear. They accuse the military of stopping rivals from campaigning freely. There are stories about PTI leaders and members of the Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Ayeen Pakistan, TTAP, allegedly being stopped at Islamabad airport. They couldn't get to Skardu to hold rallies.

Local activists are also making noise. They claim opposition figures were detained. Expelled from the region. Or just put under some kind of administrative restriction right before voting time. This just destroys any trust people have in the entire election setup.

One senior intelligence source spilled some dirt. They said these actions show a clear pattern. Pre-poll management. Designed to engineer a favorable outcome. The goal, apparently, was to ensure a compliant political leadership took over the region.

Critics are dragging in older history too. They suggest the military leadership is reviving old policies. Things reminiscent of the era of General Zia-ul-Haq. Remember how he pushed those Islamization policies everywhere? Local voices in GB are saying this encouragement of Sunni Islamist groups in a Shia-majority area is just a way for Islamabad to tighten its grip. To counter any demands for real political rights.

There are also claims about the actual voting process itself. Opposition groups allege serious irregularities. Manipulated voter lists. Fake ballot papers being circulated. Some leaders are warning about something called “Form 47-style” manipulation. This links back to the chaos surrounding the 2024 general elections, where people felt results were altered during tabulation.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government authorities stepped in. They approved sending 6,000 police personnel into Gilgit-Baltistan for “election security duty.” They’re supposed to be equipped with riot gear and special transport. But the Opposition just screams that this force wasn't there for security. They claim it was there for rigging the polls.

The intelligence side frames this whole mess differently. They call it a long-standing “deep state strategy.” Maintaining control over Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan. It’s done through a mix of electoral management and using political proxies.

They argue that bringing in LeT-linked political fronts into the region is designed to deepen sectarian divisions. It could completely change the demographic and ideological character of the area.

Of course, the government and the military just shut it down. They keep denying all these interference claims. They insist that the elections in Gilgit-Baltistan followed all the constitutional and legal rules.

India, for context, still stands firm. They maintain that Gilgit-Baltistan, along with the rest of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, is part of India. It remains under Pakistan’s illegal occupation.

So, as the June 7 election approaches, everything is being watched closely. There’s a massive tension building up. Allegations of state interference are everywhere. And there’s this growing fear about the rise of extremist-linked political actors in the region.
