Protests, Violence, and Government Shutdown in Bishnupur District

At least two people died. Five others got shot. That’s what state authorities said after an angry mob stormed a Central Reserve Police Force camp in Bishnupur district. Firing started by the security personnel.

Protests over the killing of two kids in a bomb attack earlier that day.

A big group of youths and women gathered. They protested the attack in the Moirang Tronglaobi area.

They moved toward the CRPF camp near Gelmol. That camp was only a few hundred meters from where the bomb went off. Allegedly, they set vehicles on fire. Vandalized camp property.

Konthoujam appealed to them. Not to enter the camp. Let the security forces handle catching the people responsible for the bomb attack. But they didn't listen.

The situation blew up when the crowd broke the camp perimeter. Security forces had to open fire.

The minister added the grim tally. The firing happened either in self-defense or pure anger. Two lives gone. Five people got bullet wounds.

Meanwhile, the government made a move.

Why the shutdown? The Home Department felt things were getting out of control. There were fears anti-social elements would use social media. Hate speech. Images. Videos. All to make tensions worse.

It covers everything. Broadband. Mobile data. VSATs. VPNs.

It was supposed to be preventive. Public interest. Law and order situation demanded it. They warned about legal action if people broke the rules. Exemptions might happen, if they got approval.

The unrest itself was messy. Locals protested after the camp incident. They were torching things. Two oil tankers. A truck near a petrol pump.

They also burned tires outside the Moirang Police Station. Damaged a makeshift outpost.

Security forces had to step in. Deploying troops to try and settle things down.

Another officer mentioned something else. They found an explosive device nearby on Tuesday.
