Ranveer Singh, Don 3, and the Legacy Controversy

The headlines right now, it’s all about Ranveer Singh and Don 3 . And you know, it’s not just about the actor suddenly stepping away, it’s spun into this whole mess about him being slotted in as Shah Rukh Khan’s next big move. There’s this whole layer of controversy tacked onto the film itself, you see. It got tangled up with the fact that he was being positioned as the successor.

When Farhan Akhtar first talked about making Don 3 , the initial vibe was pure excitement. Everyone was hyped, ready for the SRK legacy to continue. Naturally, the thought was, what if Ranveer Singh was the one to step into that space?

But then the director came out, and the reality hit. Ranveer Singh would be playing Don this time.

Instant backlash. Massive trolling started immediately.

Fans of the whole Shah Rukh Khan universe, they started questioning things. Doubt crept in, right? Could Ranveer actually carry that weight? Could he handle the legacy? Even though the actor had shown some serious potential in his earlier films, that doubt just flared up online. People started slamming him on social media. They rejected him as the new Don, almost instantly. It was a wave of resistance.

And amidst all that noise, Ranveer and Farhan Akhtar—they just reached out. They asked the audience for some grace. They asked for a moment to prove something. They wanted space to show why, for all the skepticism, he was actually the right person for this role. It felt like a plea, you know? A desperate need for acceptance.

Ranveer actually spoke about this when he appeared on Koffee With Karan 8 . He talked about the noise, the social media buzz. He said something kind of humble, trying to cut through the noise. He admitted, “Ek chance dedo, 12–13 saal me thik thak hi kaam kiya hai maine, toh ek mauka toh banta hai.” Give me a chance. He felt he had put in decent work over the last dozen or thirteen years. So, he deserved a chance.

That plea, it actually managed to touch some people’s hearts, I guess. There was a sliver of hope there. People started waiting. Waiting to see if he could actually revive that beloved character, if he could deliver on the expectation.

Meanwhile, going back to the creative side, Farhan had something to explain too. He chatted with Faye D’Souza last year about the writing process for Don 3 . He admitted that while he definitely thought of Shah Rukh Khan for the project, the pieces just weren’t fitting together. There wasn’t that shared ground. Things just didn’t come together the way they were hoped.

Farhan explained that they couldn't find that common ground. So, he felt the need to step back. He said, “So I was like, let me just kind of rethink what I want to do with the film and kind of go back.”

It was a real pivot. He needed to look deeper. He wanted to dig into what made the original Don, Don story tick. He wanted to find that core essence.

And that’s when the writing started. That’s when he started building something new. It took on a life of its own, this new direction. And obviously, that new direction needed someone younger.

That’s when Farhan Akhtar landed on Ranveer Singh. He just felt like the absolute right guy to go for it. He saw the fit there. He saw the potential.

It was a slow realization, really. Not a sudden decision. More like the story itself pushed them toward that conclusion. Ranveer Singh, in that moment, just seemed to be the natural fit for whatever kind of narrative they were trying to build. It wasn't just about replacing someone. It felt like a necessary evolution for the character. A chance to see what Don could mean now. And that’s when things started moving in that direction.
