Saif Ali Khan's Journey in the Film Business and Changing Industry

Saif Ali Khan has been in the film business for over thirty years now. That’s a long time. He’s seen all the ups and downs the big wins, the failures, the constant shifts and the long stretches where things just felt uncertain.

In a recent chat, he talked about those difficult parts of his career. He suggested the industry used to be a lot more forgiving when he was just trying to find his feet. That kind of ease just isn't there anymore.

He pointed out that his kids, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, are entering the scene now. And he feels they’re facing something much harder. The judgment is faster, and frankly, much harsher.

He reflected on the professional downtime he experienced after his initial break. There were opportunities, sure. But it wasn't like he was constantly handed the absolute best stuff just because he hadn't performed well. There was a real downward slide, but then luck kicked in. It was simpler back then. People seemed much more understanding.

He remembered an early big break, something from a Yash Chopra film. It didn't hit the box office, obviously. But he said, “In my defense, it wasn't about getting constant chances or being the best. I got a massive break in a movie Yash Chopra ji was directing. That was a privilege.” And then the slump hit. But Yeh Dillagi brought him back. People liked him. It was a two-hero film with Akshay Kumar. That felt different.

He mentioned getting a few opportunities along the way. Hard work paid off eventually. Things like Main Khiladi Tu Anari gave him a little reward. He slowly managed to slip into things.

Now, things are different. The environment has completely shifted.

His children are in this new landscape. And Saif feels they have to be way more prepared. That whole concept of preparation has changed, and that’s something you notice. He remembers Hrithik Roshan preparing everything the dance, the physique before he even started. But the whole movie world has morphed.

He told them preparation matters. But he also admitted that early career choices aren't always entirely up to you.

“It’s a different time,” he said. “You have to prepare, yeah, but these things are also producer calls. It’s hard to remember what it felt like being in your early twenties.” There’s this huge pull toward the big screen. People feel ready. They want to be ready.

He concluded that it’s a tough spot. To have a successful job, he thinks, you need to be blessed in life, no matter the field. But the film world has become extremely extreme. It was competitive always, but the forgiveness level? That’s definitely dropped. People aren't as forgiving now.

On the family side, Sara and Ibrahim are from his first marriage with Amrita Singh. Saif later married Kareena Kapoor. They have Taimur and Jeh.

Work-wise, where is he now? He was recently in Kartavya . Ibrahim Ali Khan shot in Sarzameen . And Sara’s latest, Pati, Patni Aur Woh Do , hit theaters last month. It didn't make a huge splash at the box office. Just another piece of the ongoing motion.
