Samarth Singh and the Investigation into Twisha Sharma's Death

Samarth Singh, the husband of Twisha Sharma, who was found dead under those weird circumstances earlier this month, wasn't exactly hiding. His lawyer claims that during those ten days he was untraceable, he wasn't hiding anything at all. This came after his arrest in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

He had vanished right after Twisha died. That’s what prompted the Bhopal Police to start looking for him, announcing a reward. He eventually got detained after reportedly trying to hand over himself before a court there.

But the lawyer, Mrigendra Singh, he argued something different. He insisted that the time Samarth was out of contact shouldn't be seen as absconding.

“He wasn’t hiding,” the lawyer told NDTV after the arrest. He pointed to a provision in the new BNSS, Section 482. It lets someone ask for anticipatory bail if they feel they’ve been wrongly implicated.

He said Samarth first tried to get legal protection. Then he decided to surrender, following advice. The lawyer also seemed confident. He felt his client would come out clean during the CBI probe.

The lawyer mentioned Samarth’s state after Twisha’s death. He said his client was emotionally shattered.

Then there was the story about the day of the incident. The lawyer recounted that Samarth had dropped Twisha off at a beauty parlour. Then he picked her up. They spent the evening together. Before she went upstairs, she said she needed space.

He also touched on why Samarth stayed away. He claimed Samarth avoided public life because an FIR with non-bailable charges already existed against him and his mother, former judge Giribala Singh.

“If they had shown up without bail protection,” he said, “they would have arrested him right away.”

The whole thing got messy with remarks from Twisha’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh. Things came up about her character and personal life. Twisha’s brother, Major Harshit Sharma, had reacted badly. He called the comments “unfathomable” and insensitive.

Samarth’s lawyer stepped in again. He defended the remarks. He argued Giribala Singh was just telling Twisha to stick to her marriage.

“After marriage, you’ll be honest. After marriage, you’ll be dedicated. Anyone will ask this,” he put.

The lawyer also brought up the mess around Twisha’s pregnancy and the abortion. He claimed Twisha told doctors she didn't want the pregnancy anymore. She took medication after talking to them. But then she changed her mind. Doctors told her the pregnancy couldn't continue.

The lawyer suggested Twisha must have suffered a lot emotionally and psychologically during that whole time.

Mrigendra Singh also made serious claims against Twisha’s family. He alleged they pushed her around. They didn't want her to settle down in Bhopal. He claimed her family forced her into glamour and financial pressure when she was young.

And then there was the allegation that Twisha had told her mother-in-law about past relationships before she married Samarth.

All these claims come up now. The investigation into Twisha Sharma’s death is still going on. It’s under the CBI now.
