Siddaramaiah’s Resignation and the Karnataka Political Shift

Siddaramaiah’s resignation. it was formally accepted by the Governor, Thaawarchand Gehlot. that means he steps down. he’s handing the reins over to someone else, caretaker mode, until things sort themselves out.
The Governor also dissolved the entire Council of Ministers right after that happened. just like that.
It all felt like the end of a long, grinding political battle inside the ruling Congress in Karnataka. days of intense, ugly activity.
Now, it clears the way. a leadership shift is coming. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is clearly the frontrunner for the top spot.
Siddaramaiah had submitted that one-line resignation on Thursday. but that move came after the Congress high command reportedly pushed him out.
It was two days after the party leadership instructed him to vacate the post. all that friction, the power tussle with Shivakumar, it was all boiling over.
He actually addressed the press shortly after handing the resignation to the Governor’s Special Secretary in Bengaluru. surrounded by Shivakumar and a few cabinet mates.
“I have tendered my resignation from the Chief Minister’s post,” Siddaramaiah said. he sounded resigned, but also… something else. he expressed confidence that the Governor would accept it, just following the rules.
The veteran leader insisted he was ready to step down whenever the party told him to. he always maintained that.
“The high command directed me two days ago to step down,” he said, thanking Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge for letting him serve Karnataka twice as CM.
ANI picked up on that. they reported he called it “voluntary.” no pressure, he insisted. he added there was no real pressure on him.
He kept the focus on the party structure. the Congress Legislature Party and the AICC would decide who the next Chief Minister would be.
Then there was the Rajya Sabha offer.
Siddaramaiah revealed that the high command had suggested he move to the Rajya Sabha. he turned it down flat.
“The high command asked me to go to the Rajya Sabha. I declined it humbly. I am not interested in national politics,” he said.
But he wasn't done. he made a promise. he said he would stay active in Karnataka politics “till my last breath.” he meant working for the people who elected him from Varuna.
He stressed his roots. his career, he said, was always about ideology and constitutional values. he recalled rising from a farmer’s family to this office. bowing to the Constitution and Ambedkar.
The atmosphere outside his residence was heavy. PTI reported emotional scenes. supporters gathered in huge numbers, demanding he stay. they were consoling him as protests started popping up across Karnataka against his exit.
Meanwhile, things were erupting elsewhere. celebrations were happening near Shivakumar’s place. indications were swirling that he was about to be sworn in.
A bunch of Congress leaders and legislators went over to Shivakumar to congratulate him.
Earlier that day, Siddaramaiah had a breakfast meeting with his cabinet. the ministers present heard him clearly. he told them he was stepping down, and that Shivakumar would take over, just as the party wanted.
Photographs surfaced later. the Chief Minister’s Office released pictures of Siddaramaiah hugging an emotional Shivakumar. another shot showed Shivakumar touching Siddaramaiah’s feet, seeking blessings. it looked… intense.
Right after the resignation, Siddaramaiah left for New Delhi. discussions were clearly set to happen there. about the leadership transition and how the cabinet would be formed with the Congress high command. Shivakumar went to Delhi separately too.
What was being discussed? selection of the new party leader. the cabinet setup. and the future of the Congress chief’s post, which currently belonged to Shivakumar. all of it was hanging in the air.
