Siddaramaiah's Resignation and the Political Maneuvering for the Next Chief Minister

Shortly after handing in the notice, Siddaramaiah told the reporters he had actually submitted the resignation directly to the Governor’s Office.

And he wasn't alone.

“I submitted my resignation today after the high command told me earlier to resign,” he explained. He added that he felt confident the Governor would accept it when he returned. It has to be constitutional, he insisted. They have the absolute majority. That means the Chief Minister should be allowed to form a government, he argued.

It was a way of acknowledging the support, the backing, however messy that backing might be.

“I would like to express my immense gratitude to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, who have provided this opportunity,” he said.

Then there was the part about his journey. He joined the Congress way back in 2006. He pointed out that all the party workers, the leaders, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members—they showed him love and support. They gave him opportunities. He thanked them all for that.

Meanwhile, the real buzz isn't just about the resignation itself. It's about what comes next.

Sources are whispering that Siddaramaiah is expected to meet with Rahul Gandhi later that Thursday. There’s a sense that a big decision is coming out of those talks, something related to the Congress Legislature Party meeting.

That CLP meeting is scheduled for Saturday. And then, the actual swearing-in for the next Chief Minister is probably going to be finalized by the end of the week. Sunday seems like the likely date for that big ceremony.

And the speculation about who will take the reins is running wild. Everyone is pointing fingers at DK Shivakumar. Sources suggest he is the one likely to become the next CM. And he’s expected to take the oath this weekend.

You can see the reaction to that. Amidst all these reports about Shivakumar taking over, his supporters were celebrating.

It’s been this way since the Congress first formed the government in Karnataka. A possible sharing of power.

The party leadership hasn't actually confirmed anything official. No formal pact has been announced. But the rumors about a “2.5-year CM formula” keep popping up. They surface every time there are meetings between Karnataka leaders and the Congress high command in Delhi. It’s just persistent noise, this idea of a formula.

Between the official statement—the resignation—and the very real political maneuvering happening behind closed doors.

The fact that Siddaramaiah emphasized the constitutional aspect, the majority, that’s one thing.

This isn't just about one person leaving office. It’s human. And it’s happening right now.
