Sonakshi Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha, and the Reality of Nepotism

Sonakshi Sinha started acting because Salman Khan pushed her. He spotted her back in the 2000s, working as an usher at some college fashion week. That was the nudge.

Her dad, Shatrughan Sinha, he actually chose not to get involved. He let her navigate everything herself. He had his own stuff going on, films like Kalka and Bihari Babu . He just stayed put.

When she talked to News18, she said something interesting. “He never told me he wanted to make a film for me.” She followed that up by revealing her dad isn’t planning to jump back into acting right now. He’s an MP, representing Asansol for the AITC.

She thought about it. “I don’t think he’s tilted towards making a film right now. He’s been in films, sure. But he’s too busy with politics. I think he handled that transition really well. He’s happy where he is.” Her last screen thing was Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se .

But she credits his method. “Tough fathers make really resilient and strong daughters,” she remarked. She mentioned her dad was soft, but also brutally honest. The main thing was that she had to prove herself. That approach, maybe different, but it worked. It created a strong, independent woman.

There’s this shift happening, you know? Back in 2010, when Dabangg came out, everyone just saw her as ‘Shatrughan Sinha’s daughter’. Now? The roles have flipped. People just call him her father. It’s funny, how these names and nicknames just make them prouder.

“It works both ways today,” she said. When he’s out there, all those airhostesses come to him, asking, ‘You’re Sonakshi Sinha’s father, right?’

He laughs. He feels proud. And every time that happens, he comes back and says, ‘Beta, they told me you are Sonakshi’s papa, right?’ She’s his daughter. That’s the reality. It’s something she’s proud of.

She’s doing something new now. Her latest movie, System , it deals with how complicated a woman’s identity can be. It touches on this whole idea of ‘reverse nepotism’. The internet obsesses over that stuff. But honestly, in real life, Sonakshi feels there’s nothing wrong with the privilege that comes from family lineage.

She looked at it straight on. “I might want a business opportunity. But the businessman’s son gets a much better shot at that than me. That’s just how the world operates. I don't think nepotism deserves all that attention from people.” She felt that strongly.
