The news coming out of Sri Lanka this week is about tourism, a big push, apparently. They announced free on-arrival visas for visitors from forty countries. India is right there on that list.
This whole thing dropped on Monday, officially from the Department of Immigration and Emigration. It’s a move aimed at boosting arrivals.
What they’re offering is a free 30-day visa. And get this—it includes a double-entry facility. You can enter twice during that time. Starting from the moment you land. That’s the deal.
But there’s a catch. A big one.
Even with the free visa, things don’t just happen. Sri Lankan authorities were very clear. Everyone still has to sort out an Electronic Travel Authorisation, or ETA , before they even step foot in the country.
That requirement isn't just for the forty countries on the list. It applies to anyone. Nationals from those countries, sure. But also visitors from places that already have those reciprocal aGreements with Sri Lanka.
Singapore. Maldives. Seychelles. Those nations are included there.
The officials insisted the ETA stays mandatory. It doesn’t matter that the visa itself is free on arrival. It’s a separate hurdle.
India, naturally, is huge for them. It’s their biggest source of tourists, always has been. This announcement feels like it’s trying to really crank up that movement between the two neighboring countries. A real strengthening of tourism.
And the list isn’t just the big names. Russia. The UK. The US. Germany. China. Denmark. There are more countries on that list, others they mentioned. It’s a broad sweep.
It all seems to stem from a need. Sri Lanka is pushing hard now. Trying to pull in more international visitors. Trying to make the tourism sector really sing.
It’s less about the visa itself and more about the whole atmosphere. Trying to attract people in.
The visa duration is fixed. Thirty days. Double entry. That’s the framework.
The government hasn't bothered talking about changing the ETA process. No extra travel rules linked to this new visa. Just the visa benefit. Effective immediately upon arrival.
It’s a very specific kind of move. You get the entry ease, but the administrative check stays in place. It’s layered. It’s not a simple handout. It’s complicated.
People are watching this closely. Waiting to see if it actually moves the numbers. Whether it actually helps the tourism flow they are aiming for. It’s just one piece of a much bigger puzzle right now.
The reaction is probably mixed. Some people are relieved about the ease of entry. Others are focusing on the logistics of the ETA. It’s all in motion, but it’s messy.
