Tabu really made a splash on the set for "Rang De" from Thakshak . People were impressed. She actually gifted gold jewelry to the choreographer, Saroj Khan, and his assistants right after they wrapped the song shoot. And the actor, he gave money to the background dancers too, after they finished that really tough dance number.
This whole story came up again because dance artiste Rubina Khan brought it up. She talked about how much Tabu struggled, how emotional she got doing it all. That track, you know, the one by A. R. Rahman and Asha Bhosle, it’s still huge. One of those songs from the 1999 film Thakshak .
Tabu worked non-stop during those rehearsals. It sounds intense. Rubina told Bollywood Thikana that Tabu pushed herself hard because Saroj Khan’s choreography was just physically demanding. She couldn't sit down much. Her body felt stiff, you know? Not enough flexibility for those moves easily. So, she just practiced, and eventually, she nailed it. They wrapped the song in four or five days.
Then came the gifting part. Rubina remembered that moment. Tabu was just so happy with the final result, she wanted to thank everyone in a big way. She gave gold bangles to Saroj Khan. A gold chain to her male assistant. A gold bracelet to her female assistant. Rubina said she had never seen an artiste do anything like that before. It just showed how happy she was that she pulled off the dance.
And it wasn't just the crew. Tabu made sure the background dancers got something too. There were about twenty-five or thirty women and a similar number of men. She gave each of them one thousand rupees. Such a kind gesture.
There was another time, too. A different shoot. Tabu stepped in to help a dancer who got hurt during rehearsals. Remember that? They were doing some Kathak movements. They had to stop in a specific pose. One of the girls sprained her leg and fell. Tabu just stopped everything. She sat down next to the injured dancer. Kept her leg on her lap. Asked a crew member for a bandage and medicine.
Rubina said Tabu comforted her, even though she was trying to handle things herself. When the dancer tried to insist she would manage it, Tabu just said, "It's not a problem. Don't you see me as one of you?" She was really sweet about it. Even though they didn't work together much after that, Rubina said she will never forget her.
"Rang De" came out in '99. It blew up because of the energy, the visuals, and Tabu’s presence. Even now, it’s one of the most memorable dance numbers she has.
