Telangana CM Warns of Agitation Over Crop Procurement and Irrigation Deal

Revanth Reddy, the Telangana Chief Minister , dropped a bomb on Monday. He basically claimed the Centre wasn't paying attention to how important crop procurement is for the state.

He warned something big was coming. A statewide agitation. If they don't get the paddy and other crops they need, he said. Deadline set for June 15.

He was speaking in Kagaznagar, Kumram Bheem Asifabad district. And the threat wasn't just words. It was very pointed.

Reddy demanded that Union Minister G Kishan Reddy—an MP from Secunderabad—sort this out. He needed the Centre to actually buy the paddy from Telangana.

There was a threat attached to this. If the Centre didn't listen, the produce would be dumped. Right at the minister's house, Barkatpura Chaman. After that June 15 date.

“I am asking Kishan Reddy where we stock the paddy, maize and others procured by us?” Reddy pressed. He appealed to him. Immediately. The Centre has to purchase everything. Even the paddy soaked in rainwater. Kishan Reddy should take that responsibility.

If he doesn't take responsibility? Well, they’ll be dumped. At your party office. Or your house. After the deadline. War will be declared on the Centre. That’s what he said.

He brought up the numbers too. The state government’s procurement was supposedly over by June 15. He mentioned maize output too. About 40 lakh quintals this season. Compared to four-five lakh quintals in the past.

The state had managed to procure 7.5 million metric tonnes of paddy. That’s the baseline.

But it wasn't just about food. There was this other thing hanging over things. The Centre proposed building the Tummidihatti barrage across the Pranhita River.

Reddy pushed Kishan Reddy to start talks. Between Telangana and Maharashtra. He wanted to protect the farmers’ interests in that deal.

He seemed genuinely frustrated. He said, “I don’t care whether it is Modi or Kishan Reddy when the farmers are facing injustice.”

He brought up the land too. Two lakh acres in the undivided Adilabad district. He said that land would get irrigated if the barrage went through. That would help Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak districts too.

He then turned the tables slightly. He asked the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, why wasn't there a response? Why wasn't the request made to secure just 2,000 acres from Maharashtra for Telangana?

“Why was the PM not responding to the request?” Reddy asked.

He added, “I don’t care about anyone if a confrontation becomes inevitable.”

The whole thing is about that barrage. The Tummidihatti project. It’s a major irrigation plan across the Pranhita, a key Godavari tributary. It’s supposed to irrigate over two lakh acres in North Telangana.

To actually build it, they need land. Roughly 2,000 acres from the neighboring Maharashtra territory.

Political friction is really ongoing. Telangana is pushing hard. They want talks. They want mediation with the Maharashtra leadership about this land. It’s messy. It’s just happening.
