The Political Significance of Ward No. 77 in Bhabanipur

The BJP managed a stunning win in Bhabanipur. It’s turned some neighborhoods into these high-voltage political zones. But Ward No. 77 ? That carries a different kind of weight. A lot more symbolism for the BJP than anything else.

On Monday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced something about MLA offices. They’re opening them across all seven wards of the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency. They’re giving out phone numbers, emails. Stuff for constituents to reach him. To ask for help with problems.

But there’s a catch. Ward No. 77 is left out. No dedicated facility there.

Adhikari told everyone he’d set up these offices everywhere. A representative, round the clock, to sort things out. A dedicated person for any need or problem you face.

“A dedicated MLA office will be opened in every ward of Bhabanipur,” he said. “Along with that, a specific phone number and email ID will launch. If you have a need, you’ll have a representative by your side to fix it.”

But everyone knows what Ward 77 means. Sources say that ward is Muslim-dominated . And overwhelmingly, it backs Mamata Banerjee .

It’s weird. Back during the campaigning, Adhikari had made predictions. He said he’d beat Banerjee in wards like 63, 71, 72, 73, 74, and 82. But he’d trail in 77. May 4th. Banerjee swept Ward 77.

Adhikari’s massive lead elsewhere helped him beat the former Chief Minister by over fifteen thousand votes on her home turf. That’s a huge margin.

Soon after the win, he was surrounded by party cadres. Saffron tilaks everywhere. He spoke about Ward 77 then.

“This was very important,” he said. “Defeating Mamata Banerjee was crucial. This is her retirement from politics. This time too, she lost by over fifteen thousand votes. Muslims voted for her openly. In Ward No. 77, all the Muslims who voted for Mamata, and Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists blessed me and made me win.”

He called it a victory for Hindutva .

That ward, Bhabanipur, and the surrounding areas—Harish Mukherjee Road, parts of Ashutosh Mukherjee Road, Motilal Nehru Road—they all fall under this. Drainage problems. Evicting hawkers. These have been issues for ages. Politically sensitive, especially the hawker stuff, which causes traffic jams.

Now you just sit there. It remains to be seen. Will the people in a ward in Bengal’s most VIP constituency actually reach out to their MLA? Or will they just keep their distance? Standing by their former MLA?
