Trinamool Congress Internal Crisis and Political Dissent

Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is really in deep trouble. It feels like the biggest internal crisis since they first formed, you know? Dissent is piling up, resignations keep happening.

Things escalated over the last twenty-four hours alone. Twenty TMC MPs decided they wanted to write to the Speaker. They wanted to join the BJP-led NDA in Parliament. This happened right around the time former Rajya Sabha chief whip Sukhendu Sekhar Ray resigned. It just throws everything into chaos.

The whole situation suggests a major implosion is coming. People are asking how much of the organization will even remain after this electoral mess.

Mamata herself seems to be facing a fresh crisis in Parliament. A group of MPs is claiming they have majority support backing the NDA now.

It all came to a head when Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee went to that INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi. They were there trying to figure out a pan-India strategy against the BJP. But amidst that, Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar stepped up. She’s leading this rebel faction.

Ghosh Dastidar claimed that nearly twenty TMC MPs have made this decision. They decided they needed to write to Speaker Om Birla declaring their support for the NDA.

“We accepted what the people wanted,” she told PTI. “We feel our political path should align with the NDA.” That’s the angle they are pushing.

But there’s a complication here. PTI sources mentioned that these dissident MPs plan something else. They want to argue before the Speaker, insisting that Ghosh Dastidar still holds the position of chief whip in the Lok Sabha. It's about power playing now.

Then there was the appointment issue. A TMC leader actually said the party had already made its move. An official letter dated May 20 showed Mamata Banerjee signing off on removing her as chief whip and putting Kalyan Banerjee in charge of the Lok Sabha Secretariat. There was even a receipt stamp from the Speaker’s office showing it got back by May 29.

It seems the rebel MPs aren't immediately jumping ship or joining the BJP outright. Instead, they are trying to hold onto something else. They want to function as a separate bloc supporting the NDA. It’s a strategy meant to dodge anti-defection law issues.

The party currently has twenty-eight Lok Sabha MPs. That number is already tricky because one seat is open following Basirhat MP Haji Nurul Islam passing away.

Amidst all this fracturing, some of these rebel MPs actually met up with the BJP leader Bhupender Yadav in Delhi. Sources say they gathered there. A photo that is floating around social media supposedly shows Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Shekhar Ray mixed in with Lok Sabha MPs like Abu Taher and Asit Mal. There were others too Arup Chakraborty, Kalipada Soren, Jagadish Basunia, Prasun Banerjee, Sharmila Sarkar, and Satabdi Roy.

They gathered there late on Sunday. Nearly twenty of them met up at some place in the capital to hash out what comes next. The conversations seemed focused on dissatisfaction with the current parliamentary leadership. Exploring options forward. A real sense of restless energy was there.

Later, a group of these rebel MPs also went and met West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday. They talked about their political strategy during this deepening internal crisis. It happened at Satabdi Roy’s residence. It lasted maybe forty minutes. When they left, the CM flashed that victory sign to everyone outside before driving off.

And there’s Sukhendu Sekhar Ray himself. He resigned from both Rajya Sabha and the core membership of the Trinamool Congress. He gave a stark reason: he accused the party of letting things slide into what felt like “15-year anarchical rule” before the BJP got control in the state.

His resignation from the Upper House was accepted by the Chairman. Ray told reporters he had submitted his decision to Mamata through WhatsApp and email. He said it would be too difficult for him to stay in the party anymore. His tenure ended in 2029, but he stepped down early.

The whole thing is messy. The turmoil following their electoral stumble seems to have pushed Mamata toward a more conciliatory stance. She went to Delhi hoping to formulate something bigger a strategy against the BJP across India. It’s all moving fast and unevenly.

This latest mess happens just days after some major internal drama in the Assembly itself. Fifty-eight of the party's eighty MLAs defied the high command. They rejected their choice for Leader of the Opposition, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay. Instead, they elected expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee to that spot. The cracks are definitely widening now.
