Trump on Israel, Hezbollah, and Iran Talks

Trump said on Monday that Israel and Hezbollah had actually aGreed to stop fighting. But he also hinted that talks with Iran were moving forward, even with all the recent tension from Israel’s military actions down in Lebanon.

This all came up when there’s still this huge uncertainty about the situation in Lebanon. And the future of those Iran negotiations.

Trump claimed he’d spoken directly with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. And he said he had a "very good call" with Hezbollah through some unnamed reps.

He wrote it on Truth Social that Netanyahu had aGreed to stop a planned military raid on Beirut.

“I had a very productive call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, and there will be no Troops going to Beirut, and any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back,” he posted.

Then he claimed Hezbollah aGreed to stop shooting too. “Likewise, through highly placed Representatives, I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they aGreed that all shooting will stop — That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel,” he wrote.

But things got messy fast.

Later on, there was this report from Iran’s Tasnim news agency. They said Tehran had actually suspended discussions with mediators.

That move, they suggested, was a protest against Israel’s expanding military push in Lebanon, the one backed by Iran and Hezbollah.

It all happened right in the middle of bigger regional headaches. Remember that joint US-Israeli offensive against Iran back on February 28th?

Despite Trump’s announcement, Netanyahu later said there was no final understanding.

His office put out a statement saying Israel would keep acting if Hezbollah attacks kept going. He said he talked to Trump that night and told him that if Hezbollah didn’t stop attacking their towns and citizens, Israel would strike terrorist targets in Beirut.

That just showed how much disaGreement there was between Washington and Jerusalem over everything.

Axios ran a piece saying Trump had called Netanyahu “crazy.” And accused him of messing up the Iran peace talks.

Then Trump went back online. He reiterated that Israeli forces had been turned back from that planned Beirut operation. He kept pushing that both sides had aGreed to stop firing. “Let’s see how long that lasts — Hopefully it will be for ETERNITY!” he wrote.

Meanwhile, there was this phone call story. Axios reported Trump lashed out at Netanyahu over the Israeli strikes in Lebanon. It messed up the Iran negotiations. Two sources familiar with the chat said Trump called Netanyahu “crazy.” They also said he played some role in helping the Israeli leader deal with the political and legal mess, including his corruption trial.

A US official briefed on the call quoted Trump pretty harshly. He said something like, “You’re f***ing crazy. You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your a**. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this.”

Earlier that day, Trump offered a different take on the Iran talks. In a chat with CNBC, he said he wasn’t worried if the talks fell apart. “Frankly, I thought they started to get very boring,” he admitted.

When talking to NBC News separately, he said he hadn't been told Iran had stopped the talks.

But he suggested maybe less talking would be better. “I think we’ve been talking too much if you want to know the truth,” he said. “I think going silent would be very good, and that could be for a long time.”

Trump also hinted that maybe an aGreement with Iran to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be sealed “over the next week.” He even suggested a peace deal with Iran could be “even better than a military victory.”
