UAE Pivots Towards India Amid Geopolitical Fallout

The geopolitical fallout from the US-Iran war is really shaking up regional alliances. And right now, the United Arab Emirates is pivoting hard towards India .

Top diplomatic and security folks are telling CNN-News18 that Abu Dhabi is actually pushing multiple ideas for a massive bilateral defense and security deal with India. It feels like one of the biggest strategic realignments happening in the Gulf these last few years.

Why the sudden shift? It seems tied up with growing dissatisfaction. The UAE leadership is keen on setting up something sort of a "Saudi-Pakistan style" mutual defense framework with India. This is happening because they’re getting seriously fed up with some of the traditional partners—Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and Pakistan. They feel these nations leaned too far towards Iran during the recent conflict.

This whole development is unfolding right before Prime Minister Modi’s planned visit to the UAE on May 15th. Defence cooperation and these broader strategic ties are definitely going to be big talking points with Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

There’s also the matter of the conflict itself. Sources suggest Abu Dhabi feels the country took a huge hit. Reports say Iran launched over 550 ballistic and cruise missiles, plus nearly 2,800 drones aimed at the UAE during the war. That caused massive security headaches in Abu Dhabi. It forced a total reassessment of who they could trust regionally.

The diplomatic friction got worse after a meeting in Islamabad, though. A ministerial-level chat on March 29th and 30th involving Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. Top sources indicated the UAE was really angry they weren't invited to those talks about the Iran conflict, especially since they were among the worst hit Gulf states.

And the frustration with Saudi Arabia? That’s been building for months. Abu Dhabi quitting OPEC, for example, looked like a clear sign of the cracks widening within the entire GCC. Then there was Saudi Arabia stepping in to financially back Pakistan, which Abu Dhabi felt was unfair, especially when they were allegedly considering tougher financial moves against Islamabad.

Security ties between India and the UAE aren't new, though. They’ve already expanded fast over the years through trade deals and other strategic aGreements. Ajit Doval’s recent trip to Abu Dhabi included talks about new security arrangements and mechanisms. Deepening that defense cooperation.

There was already some groundwork laid. Modi and Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed signed a Letter of Intent in New Delhi back in January 2026, setting up a bilateral defense partnership. Now, the UAE is reportedly trying to turn that framework into an actual, operational pact.

Ultimately, Abu Dhabi seems to be seeing India as a much more stable, reliable long-term security partner. Someone who can help balance out all the shifting power dynamics happening across West Asia.
