Urvashi Rautela at Cannes: Maximalism, Fashion Drama, and Celebrity Views

Urvashi Rautela was there again. Fifth time, the Cannes red carpet.

She showed up in a heavy silver gown from JoliPoli Couture. Really dramatic stuff. But the real thing everyone was talking about? A headpiece. Bird-inspired. Styled like a maang tika . Just wild.

Ever since she first hit Cannes in 2022, it’s been this maximalism. Crocodile neckpiece. Parrot clutch. Electric blue lipstick. People either loved the ‘go big or go home’ vibe, or they called it total camp drama. The fashion police, naturally, had their issues.

Then you have Sufi Motiwala. He also made his debut there this year. He spoke exclusively to News18. And he surprisingly liked Urvashi.

He said she’s a fixture now. But meeting someone who isn't afraid to just be themselves? That’s exciting. He felt she’s shifted how Indian maximalism gets seen at Cannes.

“It’s exciting just seeing someone who doesn’t feel afraid to deliver a fashion moment,” he told us. “A lot of people play it safe. Once you play it safe, it just vanishes. No impact. No taste. No after-value.”

He paused. That’s the core of it, I guess. People just see ‘cute. Wow! Bye!’

He then looked at her choices.

“But her actual clothes? That’s a separate conversation, altogether,” Sufi added.

He admitted, though, that it’s mixed. Sometimes, when she dresses simple, understated, it actually looks good. But when she goes crazy? It becomes a 50-50 mess. Sometimes the crazy lands, like those Judith Leiber bags. But other times, the craziness is just… psychotic. Like those eight Labubus stuff at Wimbledon 2025.

He didn't hold back on the history either. He brought up some old looks.

He recalled Sherlyn Chopra in 2013. For her film, Kamasutra 3D . He called it an absolute atrocity. Mesh on the body, two-piece moment. Everything everywhere all at once. Zero out of ten, he said.

Then there was Mallika Sherawat in 2005. That was one of the first big Indian celebrity moments on the carpet to go viral. She wore a white blouse, plunging neckline, white skirt.

Sufi said honestly, it looked like she was wearing H&M.

But he softened it. He understood the context then. The carpets weren't as timid back then. So, he conceded. He would have liked a little more maximalism. Even if the world was still trying to make things culturally appropriate, she might as well have added a belt. Some jewelry. Jhumkas. Something. He gave that look a five out of ten.

It’s all very messy, isn't it? Fashion at Cannes. It’s not just about the clothes. It’s about how much risk you’re willing to take. And whether that risk pays off.
