US Lawmaker Pushes Pakistan for Action Against Terror Groups

A senior US lawmaker pushed Pakistan hard for action against the terror groups operating there. This happened during an event hosted by the Indian Embassy in Washington. It marked the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack.

The whole exhibition was called “The Human Cost of Terrorism.” It was set up at Capitol Hill by the Indian Embassy. It drew some bipartisan interest from American lawmakers.

Nineteen members of Congress showed up. About sixty congressional staffers were there too. And then there was a virtual presence. A survivor of 9/11 and a Pentagon first responder joined the program online.

Brad Sherman, a guy from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was addressing everyone. He brought up the victims of the Pahalgam attack. He linked that assault directly to terror networks based in Pakistan.

He said the attackers, they called themselves The Resistance Front, deliberately targeted civilians. They allegedly separated victims based on religion.

They keep finding safe haven in Pakistan.”

Sherman pushed for something specific. He wanted the Pakistani government to crack down. Not just on Lashkar-e-Taiba. But on Jaish-e-Mohammed and other terrorist outfits too.

This whole thing happened while Pakistan was trying to project itself internationally as some kind of peacemaker. They were trying to be a mediator, especially amid the recent US-Iran mess.

Speakers at the event really hammered home a contradiction. They talked about the gap between what Islamabad was saying on the diplomatic side and the fact that these extremist groups were still sitting right inside Pakistan’s borders.

Just a mix of people.

The exhibition itself had digital panels. They showed major terror attacks globally. And the Pahalgam attack was included too. Details about the terror groups and the people blamed for them were displayed.

India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, said the whole exhibition was meant to be a stark reminder. About the global threat terrorism poses.

“The scourge of terror keeps challenging societies everywhere,” he told the reporters. “Countries need to stand up. Be resolute. Confront this terrorism.”

Kwatra added that India’s stance on this has always been pretty clear. Prime Minister Modi keeps repeating that India is determined to act firmly against terrorism, no matter the form it takes.
